Moving House

A family home of our own. Our first one. Next week we are moving. I am so crazy excited in anticipation. But there is so very much to do before now and then. One house to pack and another to unpack. It’s going to take all our spare time.

So I think I need to take a little break from here for a while. There is so much to do. We need to downsize a lot; our new home is much smaller than this one. I need to really prioritise; what do we really need? What enriches our lives? What is simply clutter and taking up space? I think we’ll need a Skip bin or two as well as a few trips to the charity stores.

So I’ll see you all in a fortnight from our new home. I am so looking forward to showing you around. It really is lovely.

  1. So exciting! Can’t wait (& I bet you can’t either) to see you all settled in!

    1. It feels like a really big move this time. We’ve moved lots with the army but this time it feels like, since we’re staying for good, that I want to make sure we only take what we need and want. I’m excited but exhausted already from the cleaning and there’s still a week before we move.

  2. Good luck with your move…at once exhausting and exhilarating! 😀

    1. It is exhausting, isn’t it? I went and had a little peek around our new place today to get a bit of energy back to keep cleaning and sorting. I really can’t wait to get into our new home 🙂

  3. Hi, Kate! First of all, congratulations! And good luck! We just moved to a small farmhouse where space is limited. I have to be honest….as organized as I am, it has been a challenge making this space work for 2 homeschooled kids. We love the house, but find ourselves at times frustrated at the rate in which things accumulate on shared surfaces and the almost “too” simplified amount of personal possessions for each kid. I am only saying this to you not to discourage you, but because I am excited to see what works for you in your new space. Maybe I will get an idea! I love your play/work area in your home and am excited to see how they translate to your new space!! Cheers~ Mindy, Maine USA

    1. I think it will be a challenge for us too. I am really used to this very large house where the kids have a playroom and an art space as well as their own rooms. Our new home will only have their rooms and a small nook in the lounge room. It will be a challenge organising everything and I think I’ll have to play around for a while to see what works. We didn’t really use their rooms too much so we’ll definitely be making good use of that space. I have been thinking a lot about their little play nook and how I can best use that space for project work and learning too. It’ll be fun though 🙂

  4. Good Luck! We’ve just moved with a six month in tow. It was chaotic, but totally worth it. My only advice would be not to worry too much about getting everything unpacked straight away, you can survive with fewer things (in the kitchen etc) than you think you can 🙂

    1. Thanks Sally. I think it will take us a little while to get things put away. This house is much smaller and with much less cupboard space so I am not sure where everything will go! 😀

It is difficult moving with little ones, isn’t it? We moved to this house when Jack was 2 and Sarah was 4 weeks old. So very exhausting. At least this time my parents live near by and so my mum is going to look after Jack and Sarah for the two days we move. That should take a lot of the stress out of moving and be a lot more fun for the kids too.

  5. Congratulations on the new house and good luck with the move!
When I was young, my family moved several times for my Dad’s work, and when I was a university student I moved more times than I can count. What I loved best was the unpacking – finding a place for everything and freeing yourself of the things that simply don’t fit in your new surroundings. Enjoy that exciting and purifying time!

    1. I’m a bit the same Kaly 🙂 I think I counted when I was 30 that I had already lived in 33 houses! I do love unpacking too. I think I reminisce over things a bit too long and so it takes a little longer than it really should to put things away 🙂 That and I think I move things around about 20 times before I am happy with them. You’re so right though, every time we move I find things that just don’t fit anymore and it is really purifying to be rid of them. Freecycle will be getting a lot of things real soon I think 🙂

  6. How exciting – I can’t wait to see you all settled in to new spaces – you have such a lovely way with this.

    1. Thanks Emily. I am really looking forward to setting up our spaces too. We were hoping to paint before we moved in (the previous owners painted the main living area lime green!!) but I don’t think we are going to have time anymore. So you’ll see some lovely green areas soon 😛

  7. i’ve just recently come across your beautiful blog… and simply love it! i have to say, while i will miss your posts during your move, i’m excited to be able to catch up on all your other posts! good luck with your move… and looking forward to your return 🙂
