Preschool Art: Explorations, Books and Materials

Art is about exploration; free exploration of a wide range of art materials and experiences. For our preschool homeschool program I wanted to introduce Jack and Sarah to meaningful art experiences; authentic art materials and time and freedom to explore in-depth.

Exploring Reggio - Playdough faces - An Everyday StoryNative bird study - watercolour pencils - An Everyday Story

Art Books:

Some wonderfully inspiring books for introducing child-led authentic art explorations.

Art Materials:

Forget poor quality kiddie art materials. Authentic art materials are affordable and offer a much more engaging art experience for children. You don’t need a lot of space either. Have a peek inside our art cupboard.

Art Materials - An Everyday StoryHere’s our favourite art materials:

  • clay – air dry and recycled (try your local potter society for cheap recycled clay)
  • watercolours – block and liquid
  • oil pastels
  • chalk pastels
  • watercolour pencils
  • wire
  • wax crayons
  • coloured pencils
  • paper – different thicknesses
  • glue – stick and liquid
  • paint – acrylic and washable

“The wider the range of possibilities we offer children,

the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences”

~ Loris Malaguzzi

You’re an inspiration! I need to know more about using Reggio for 2-3 year olds. Thank you so much.
