Dig Vis Drill
Their early beginnings were formed around a tin of biscuits (custard creams were never mentioned as to being the catalyst of the beginnings of this group but then again they were never denied neither). A band based in Sheffield, their early gigs were followed by a few skirmishes of little note and put down to alcohol intake. The band caused controversy practically all their life from being chastised by the bishop of sheffield in the Sheffield Star newspaper following an interview by the south yorkshire police for walking in the city centre on a saturday afternoon with one of the band members carrying a cross, The bishop complained that he wasn't even wearing sandals, to other things like the lead singer Ogy Mcgrath getting falsely arrested in Scarborough North Yorkshire while on tour and they just managed to get to the next gig with literally minutes to spare. Apparently from one witness in the van at the time it was likened to Capt Oates ..in that he never came back for sometime ...He had stepped out of the van innocently at 4 am in order to urinate..Some time later..very very later a friendly policeman gently tapped on the the door of the van to inform the half asleep occupants that Ogy Mcgrath had indeed beeen arrested for vandalism. Their gigs became widespread and vivid such was the time when during one of their songs at the Monkey Club in Norwich, someone appeared from the wings of the stage and proceeded to undress himself and run around naked much to the distress of the bouncers who flipped a coin to see which one would tackle him and his flailing 'wedding tackle' so to speak...They often played gigs on tour with Pulp, Mr Morality, Henry Normal (who later went on to write scripts with Steve Coogan) Screaming Trees and even the occasional gig with John Cooper Clarke the punk poet etc etc. A story much banded about during pub banter of having a laugh was once when on the way to a gig in Brighton the band stopped to ask directions from a rather small chap with
