Nirupa Roy

Nirupa Roy, born as Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara in 1931, carved a niche for herself in the Indian film industry as an actress who epitomized Indian motherhood. Her journey commenced in Valsad, Gujarat, where she spent her early years before moving to Mumbai, then known as Bombay, to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. Interestingly, Nirupa's acting career didn't start in cinema, but rather in theatre, where she gained recognition for her performance in Gujarati plays. Known initially for her roles as leading lady in mythological films during the 1940s and 1950s, Nirupa transitioned into playing mother roles in the 1970s, earning her the title of "Bollywood's quintessential mother." Some of her most memorable performances can be seen in films like Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony and Mukaddar Ka Sikandar. While she played mother to almost all leading actors of her era, her on-screen chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan was particularly appreciated, making them one of the most iconic mother-son duos of Bollywood. Despite being stereo-typed into motherly roles, Nirupa Roy's effortless portrayal of these characters demonstrated her versatility and depth as an actress. In her illustrious career spanning over five decades, she appeared in more than 200 films, leaving an indelible mark in Indian cinema. Away from the limelight, Nirupa Roy led a quiet life, immersed in spirituality. She passed away in 2004, but her legacy lives on through her timeless performances that continue to resonate with audiences, making her a true legend of Indian cinema.
