WINZ
WINZ is a sports talk radio station that serves Miami-Fort Lauderdale. The station airs primarily syndicated programming. Its daytime signal reaches as far north as Ft. Pierce, as far west as Ft. Myers and Naples, and as far south as Cuba. The station has managed to score ratings in the Ft. Myers-Naples and West Palm Beach-Boca Raton radio markets despite its transmitter being far away, over 100 miles away in the case of Ft. Myers-Naples, and having no promotion. Its studios are located in Miramar and the transmitter site is in Miami Gardens. The station is non-directional in the daytime hours and broadcasts with 50,000 watts; during nighttime hours the WINZ directional skywave pattern contours the shape of the United States, as the station has to project no signal into either Canada or Mexico because those countries have the Class A Clear Channel Rights to the 940 kHz frequency. Such stations are XEQ-AM in Mexico City, and a station allocation in Montreal previously occupied by CINW, which fell silent in February 2010; however, the allocation still exists by international treaty, and will soon be occupied by a new station.
