About this list

Anime characters with parent issues abound, but the problems these characters face are particularly harsh. Abandonment and tragic parental deaths are just the beginning. In the world of anime heroes and villains, functional parents are scarce. Heroes might find mentors, but most anime and manga parents are either inadequate or absent. Main characters often witness their parents' demise, abandonment, or are simply never given a parental figure. Bruce Wayne's parent issues pale in comparison to those of these anime and manga characters, who have complex emotional relationships with their parents. Spoilers ahead.
