Films with flawless CGI often earn high praise for blending reality and fantasy. With years of refinement, today's CGI is generally well-executed. But '90s CGI is a different story. Many directors experimented with the emerging technology, yet struggled to implement it effectively. As a result, '90s CGI often looks dated. Characters frequently appear disconnected from their surroundings, and details like shadows or water movement are overlooked. This can make their movements seem unnatural. Whatever the mistake, '90s movies with CGI can be laughable today. Which '90s film CGI effects are the most cringe-worthy?

Flying blobs with teeth appear in "The Langoliers".The LangoliersThese flying blobs are unbelievable. They spoil the suspense in the scene. Characters look stressed, but the monsters do not scare the audience. The monsters do not act like a real threat to the characters.
1,031 - 2

The characters inLost in SpaceThe characters in Lost in Space run into acute little alienA creature called "monkey lizard" blarped during its travels. The CGI for this little guy is rough. It is obvious Matt LeBlanc is not holding Blarp when he should be.
382 - 3

Liu Kang finally defeats Shao-Kahn in a battle for Earth's fate. Kahn turns into a dragon. The creature pops out of his human body, looking like a page flip in a book or card. The dragon flips mid-air through a bright blue portal that vanishes, sucking the creature in. The movie uses sci-fi concepts, but the transformation graphics pull viewers away from Kang's victory over evil.
305 - 4
SpawnSpawn uses CGI everywhere. Even fire effects look fake. The blue flame dagger, lava, and Devil do not look real. Cogliostro fights the Devil, but the CGI proves too hard. The lava rock floor moves, but Cogliostro does not move with it, pulling viewers out.
247 - 5

The filming team forAn American Werewolf in ParisThe filming team for An American Werewolf in Paris used darkness. They hardly show the fictional creatures in light, following old stories. The creatures look more human than wolf-like. Even in sewer tunnels, the werewolf's mouth and teeth look more gorilla-like. The werewolf shadow scenes might be scarier than the werewolf itself.
151 - 6

There is much wrong withThe Lawnmower ManThe Lawnmower Man, but the VR experience is rough. '90s virtual reality was new. The blocky computer graphic hand lacks creativity. The graphic was made for a simple man, so it did not need to be cutting edge. Still, an audience would have found these mind-training videos more believable.
137 - 7

The Gibbs hanging out the window as the President's plane crashes into the Caspian Sea looks like green screen. The plane tumbles on the water unrealistically. They use the water's force to break the plane apart. This makes the damage seem not catastrophic, leaving the ending weak. The water behind the crash does not phase at all. This CGI is just bad.
135 - 8

Deep Blue Sea appears in the list of 19 worst CGI moments from the 1990s.People often mock Deep Blue Sea's awful CGI sharks, like most shark terror movies. A scene shows a shark eating a star like Samuel L. Jackson. The shark jumps from a small opening. With Jackson's back to the pool, the shark grabs him in its mouth. The problem arises when the "body dummy" used for Jackson looks poorly made. The video game character is Deep Blue Sea.At that moment, everything in the film seems fake or digitally altered. This does not add credibility to the terror these sharks should cause.
117 - 9

Blade hunts the vampire Deacon Frost. A serum meant to overpower Blade's half-vampire blood thirst is injected into Frost, a full vampire. The serum causes Frost to explode. Frost's body expands and bubbles. The shadow underneath does not change with his size increase. Blade sees Frost's shadow from his arm while blocking the splatter, but Frost's shadow does not appear in the right place.
103 - 10

The team tries to escape. Westridge distracts the anaconda by climbing the waterfall. Cornered, he jumps for safety. The CGI snake swoops in and curls him up, seeming to defy gravity. The whole scene moves too smoothly to feel real. Anacondas are muscular, yes, but the snake's movements here are highly unrealistic.
94 - 11

Shadow Warrior Koga Shoku possesses Jimmy's brother Billy. The two fight. When the medallion around Jimmy's neck falls, Shoku's shadow body slithers over and snags the medallion to take a physical shape. The CGI in the transformation is funny. He starts emerging from his shadow form, which looks like a black hole, turning into a holographic person filled with TV static.
66 - 12

CGI animals get intense scrutiny only when they are common household pets. Their features are more recognizable, so anything wrong stands out.Jumanji is on the list of 19 worst CGI moments from the 1990s.CGI recreated lesser-known animals like monkeys, elephants, and mosquitos. These animals do not look realistic. The monkeys making a mess in the kitchen are particularly unsettling because of their scary facial features. Unrealistic CGI monkeys pull the audience out, showing these creatures belong in a board game, entirely fictional.

When Admiral Dougherty tries to stop the mission in Star Trek: Insurrection is listed in '19 Worst '90s Movie CGI Moments'., he scuffles and lands on a machine's table. That machine slowly changes his face to look like melted rubber. The CGI sequence moves too slowly and too fast. Also, his cheeks look fake, hurting the realism.

In a scene not shown before in the 1977 hit A New Hope is listed in '19 Worst '90s Movie CGI Moments'., the 1997 remastered version used CGI for Jabba the Hutt is listed in '19 Worst '90s Movie CGI Moments'.Jabba the Hutt talks to Han Solo. When both characters are in profile, the CGI effects make their depth look wrong, almost making them not look at each other. Solo steps on Jabba's tail, and when he steps down, he glitches or blurs, which stops this scene from connecting with fans.
-62 - 16

Draco never interacts well with water. The water does not ripple right when a dragon his size touches it. This shows clearly in the scene where Draco saves Bowen. While standing in the pond, his foot—paw?—lifts slightly out of the water and goes back in without any ripples. The dragon looks unrealistic, but focusing on simple water movement would improve it.
-76 - 17

Dr. Weir breaks the ship's window in Event Horizon is listed in '19 Worst '90s Movie CGI Moments'., shattering the glass and sending items into space. The glass looks like it has a 3D effect, but it does not. The debris flies out unrealistically. Each piece spins too calmly into space; the scene implies they should move faster.
-88 - 18

Frank and Magda crash their car while running from the Grim Reaper. The Reaper catches them. He kills Magda, then propels himself into her, and they hit the forest ground. They land, but neither the Reaper nor Magda actually hit the ground; they look like they landed on a bouncing cushion initially. These bad effects pull viewers out of the movie, even for that second.

The first part shows this.Star WarsIn the first Star Wars film of the prequel series, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi get trapped by droids while facing Darth Maul. The two jet down the hallway at near light speed, appearing as virtual blurs. For a film that mastered much CGI, this speed trick seems odd. Since the speed trick rarely appears, fans question its purpose.
