About this list

The devil's presence in rock 'n' roll dates back to before the genre existed. In the early 1900s, anything outside traditional society's norms was considered devil worship, particularly in jazz and blues, which were rooted in hell. The legend of blues guitarist Robert Johnson, who made a deal with the devil at the crossroads and returned a virtuoso, is well-known. Rock music, born from blues and country, has been steeped in devilish lore, influencing musicians like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Alice Cooper. Some bands below trace their influences back to those Mississippi crossroads, while others draw inspiration from Satanist interests and the birth of heavy metal.

    Coven

Coven added occult elements to its image and music in the late 1960s, before Black Sabbath. The Chicago band opened for Sabbath, Alice Cooper, MC5, and The Yardbirds. They used a live black mass, a roadie on an inverted cross, and the "sign of the horns" hand gesture in their stage show before Gene Simmons showed a glint in his eyes.

Coven's 1969 debut album,Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls, features the only recording of a black mass on a rock album. The band did well, but momentum stopped when Charles Manson held a copy. The occult lost its appeal after the Tate/Labianca murders, and Coven's label support, booked shows, and album sales vanished overnight.

Coven produced a 1971 hit single "One Tin Soldier" (for the movie Billy Jack), and made two more albums, but stopped in 1976. When the genre they made finally caught up, Coven regrouped (with singer Jinx Dawson) in the early 2000s and still performs sometimes.Billy Jack), and released two more albums before stopping in 1976. Coven regrouped in the early 2000s under singer Jinx Dawson and still plays now.

    Black Sabbath

The granddaddy by which all doom and black metal bands are measured,Black Sabbathformed inBirmingham, England, in 1968Black Sabbath stood against the peace and love feel of the hippie movement. As the Vietnam conflict grew and politics heated up, Sabbath hit the dark side of the era. That devilish mystique helped the band's success since then.

Sabbath always used occult imagery. However, the band members are more atheist or agnostic than others. Ozzy Osbourne, the singer, said, "We were never really into the occult." He added, "It was a hobby until we got invites to black-magic rites in cemeteries. Then I got accused of doing this and biting that, and people would picket the arena with banners. But listen to the lyrics; nothing shows pro-black magic or pro-satanic worship. It is like 'God Is Dead?'—the end says, 'I don't believe that God is dead,' but they only hear 'God is dead.'"

    Marilyn Manson

Manson is less metal than shock rock, but he is a member of the Church of Satan. In his 1998 book,...Marilyn Manson's album is 'The Long Hard Road Out of Hell'.Marilyn Manson talks aboutAnton LaVey met the church founder.:

Near the visit's end, he told me, "I want to make you a Reverend," and gave me a crimson card certifying me a minister in the Church of Satan. This felt like an honorary degree from a university. As I left, LaVey placed a bony hand on my shoulder. It felt cold. He said, "You’re gonna make a big dent. You’re going to make an impression on the world."

Church of Satan High PriestPeter GilmorePeter Gilmore offered more detail about Manson's role in the church in 2007. He revealed Manson is not an ordained minister; he is an honorary member. When asked what Satanism is, Manson can explain it clearly. But his music is his art. His stage shows are his own; they do not really show Satanism specifically.
