About this list

Science fiction's most heartbreaking deaths remind us that the genre is deeply rooted in humanity. Robots, artificial intelligence, and futuristic tech can't compare to the emotional impact of a character's demise, regardless of whether they're human, alien, or droid. As long as a character has a sentient conscience, their death can be devastating. These sci-fi characters all delivered a final emotional gut-punch, proving that mankind can empathize with anything, as long as there's a reason to care.

Tommy Screams Into The Void After Discovering His Unavoidable Fate ('Never Let Me Go')

They form a love triangle while dealing with their upcoming operations.

After Ruth donates her organs and dies, Tommy and Kathy finally unite. They try using their love to get a "deferral"—an exemption from organ donation if true love exists.
