About this list

Cinemascore, founded by Edward Mintz in 1978, conducts exit polls to gauge the public's opinion on films, separate from critic reviews and box office numbers. Mintz recalled being inspired after hating a Neil Simon movie that critics loved, thinking, 'Who cares what critics say? I want to know what other fans think.' Films are graded from A to F, with pluses and minuses possible for every letter but F. The final grade is an average of all moviegoers' responses. Only 23 films have received an F cinemascore since its inception. Although some records only include movies graded since Cinemascore's website launched in 1999, we've included two earlier films, Homework (1982) and Bolero (1984), which were previously documented.
