Russell Boyd, an Australian cinematographer born April 21, 1944, gained fame with his work on Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), the first of several projects with director Peter Weir. Boyd joined the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) and the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). Boyd shot Tender Mercies, a 1983 film featuring Robert Duvall as an alcoholic country singer. Boyd used available light to give the film a natural feel, which director Bruce Beresford called key to the movie.
