About this list

Inspiration can strike at odd times, and often at the same time for multiple people. Horror movies frequently adapt the same story or feature similar plot points. Some spooky movies are virtually identical, not because filmmakers copied each other, but perhaps because the zeitgeist inspired multiple writers and directors to explore the same idea, like underwater monster movies or Scream parodies. When similar horror films are paired, one often succeeds while the other falls short, due to poor writing or budget constraints. In rare cases, both movies excel, but usually only one of these near-identical horror movies stands the test of time.
