About this list

In the Marvel Universe, individuals with an X-Gene undergo a significant change when their mutant powers emerge, usually around puberty or after a traumatic event. Some mutants experience a secondary mutation or a story-driven change, altering their powers over time. Change is a fact of life in the superpowered world, particularly for the X-Men and House of X characters. This can leave casual fans feeling lost, as even well-known mutants like Wolverine or Professor X may have different abilities now than they did years ago. Vote up the most surprisingly serious mutant mutations.

Iceman Went From Lobbing Snowballs To Controlling All Moisture

What You Thought He Could Do: Robert Drake began as a friendly snowman. He lobbed snowballs at the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Iceman later gained better skills: covering his whole body in ice, freezing objects, and making ice-slides to zip around.

What He Can Do Now: Iceman got a second mutation.and Iceman found his Omega Mutant potential. This made him an X-Man. He moved far past snowballs. Drake still freezes things, but now he controls things down to the molecule. He controls all moisture, not just ice and cold. His second mutation turned his whole body into organic ice, making him nearly indestructible. If you break Iceman, he reforms. If you melt him, he condenses back fast. He can spread his mind into multiple "ice golems." Iceman can jump into the ocean and instantly move across by turning himself into water molecules on the other side. Simply put, Iceman can do almost anything.

Gambit Could Briefly See The Future, And Still May Be Able To Disintegrate Opponents

What You Thought He Could Do: Remy Lebeau converts stored energy in objects into motion. He uses molecular acceleration to charge items, like playing cards, readying them to explode. Also, Remy can subtly hypnotize people with his mutant charm from the start, though people rarely mention that power.

What He Can Do Now: Gambit once blinded himself with an exploding card. During that time, he gained the ability to see future glimpses by holding his cards. This power vanished before anyone knew where it came from. When Remy Lebeau became the Horseman of Death for Apocalypse, his powers changed. It also stops her from ever touching people she loves. What He Can Do Now: Elixir shows greater power evolution than other mutants. First, he healed himself, turning his skin gold, possibly a second mutation. Foley then learned his Omega-level biokinesis could attack. This became the “Death Touch,” which turns his skin deep metallic black when used on an enemy. Last, Elixir found he could bring the dead back, including himself. This makes him nearly un-killable. He uses these resurrection powers with the Five, a group where mutants achieved functional immortality.

Angel's Blood Can Now Heal People

What You Thought He Could Do: As Angel, Warren Worthington III founded the X-Men despite his limited powers: large feathery wings letting him fly. This form brought the character peak popularity, but it wasn't his final change.

What He Can Do Now: Angel learned about his healing factor. Violent events showed him his blood could heal others via transfusion. Worthington worked as a full-time blood donor at a children’s hospital. An encounter with a Life Seed helped Angel bring people and puppies back from the dead. These powers are gone now. He can still switch to Archangel mode, though he prefers not to.

Kid Omega’s Secondary Mutation Was Fatal

What You Thought He Could Do: Quentin Quire was the arrogant bad boy at Xavier Institute. He had a huge power set. He called himself Kid Omega. Quire showed great telepathic and telekinetic skills. He produced a psionic shotgun. Then, he became addicted to the mutant drug Kick and lost control.

What He Can Do Now: Kick eventually induced a secondary mutation in Quire, and not the good kind. His brain transformed into faster-than-light energy, putting him into psychic contact with everyone on Earth at once, but also seemingly ending his life. But Kid Omega, as it turned out, was actually able to transform his entire being into psionic energy, and so he was able to manifest himself back into existence on a couple of occasions - mastering the skill just in time to enroll at Wolverine’s rebooted school for gifted youngsters. Since then, Quire has maintained his corporeal form, and gone back to his old habits of firing psionic shotguns and rebelling against authority - though he still has enough power within him to wield the Phoenix and fight alongside the Mighty Thor.

Black Tom Cassidy Became A Knockoff Swamp Thing

What You Thought He Could Do: Black Tom Cassidy is a usually villainous mutant best known for being Banshee’s cousin and the Juggernaut’s best friend. Initially, his powers were limited to thermokinetic blasts that he had to channel through wood, usually in the form of his trademark shillelagh. If his powers were notable for anything, it’s that they could not be used against his cousin - other than that, he was pretty run-of-the-mill.

What He Can Do Now: A grievous injury led to Black Tom undergoing a secondary mutation - actually, make that two secondary mutations - that turned him into a sentient plant-form. With much of his body now composed of wood, Cassidy’s powers grew immensely, to the point that he became capable of controlling all plant life. Like many, Cassidy was de-powered by the Scarlet Witch but has since regained some of his former abilities, including something known as environmental symbiosis. This has made him a perfect partner and protector for Krakoa, the living mutant island that has recently become a sovereign home for all mutantkind.

Wolfsbane Mutated Into An Entire Wolf Pack

What You Thought She Could Do: Rahne Sinclair was a founding member of the New Mutants with a superpower unique among the X-Men, but not at all among the ranks of fiction: the ability to transform into a wolf. Wolfsbane doesn’t even need a full moon to do it, and the transformation comes with a whole host of enhanced senses and abilities.

What She Can Do Now: Wolfsbane has been through a lot since her early days with the New Mutants. She’s perished multiple times, and she’s also enjoyed a romantic relationship with the Asgardian god of wolves. Tragically, her child was caught up in a gang war between devils, and ultimately slain. After all that, Sinclair underwent a secondary mutation that lengthened her claws and allowed her to transform into not just one, but up to five different wolves at the same time - though she usually requires an assist from her pal Magik to pull it off.

Toad's Tongue Got A Fiery Upgrade

What You Thought He Could Do: Mortimer Toynbee received more mutant powers than the average X-Gene holder, yet he still got the weak side of the superpower issue. Toad stays squat and flexible like his name suggests. He leaps far distances with real force. Toad sticks to walls. His tongue acts like a prehensile organ, stretching up to 30 feet long. He is powerful, and he is gross.

What He Can Do Now: He can now generate intense heat.Acidic saliva and paralytic resin showed up over time. Toad gained a new superpower after a secondary mutation while living in the short-lived mutant nation of New Tian. Now, Toad can light his tongue on fire whenever he wants. This is an upgrade, certainly, but not in coolness.

    Blob Became Super-Stretchy

What You Thought He Could Do: You thought he could manipulate time.“Nothing moves the Blob!” During his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants days, Fred Dukes was a huge, invulnerable guy. His impenetrable, rubbery skin withstood any hit. The Blob survived bullets, missiles, and punches from Colossus—though he still got knocked down. Plus, the Blob had super-strength.

What He Can Do Now: He can now generate intense heat.Miss Sinister used genetic experimentation called the Mothervine process, employing technology from another universe, which triggered a secondary mutation in Dukes. The Blob’s new abilities moved the skin's stretchiness to his whole body, letting him stretch all his limbs like Mr. Fantastic. Dukes first could not control these new powers; he became a fleshy puddle on the floor. Eventually, the Blob mastered his stretchiness and became stronger than ever, just before the Scarlet Witch permanently de-powered him. Now, he hangs out on Krakoa.
