It Took 23 Years To Solve The Murder Of Sherri Rasmussen

Just a few months after marrying, John returned home to find his wife murdered. The house was ransacked. Sherri had three chest shots. The second two wounds showed the gun was placed on her chest and fired at close range. Investigators thought robbery caused the death, but Sherri's father, Nels Rasmussen, disagreed. The killing seemed personal. His daughter told him about John's ex-girlfriend, a 'lady-cop' who harassed her. The woman showed up unannounced at the house and threatened their relationship, even at Sherri's workplace.

Robbers ransacked the house. Sherri took three chest shots. Two wounds showed the gun hit her chest at point-blank range. Investigators thought a robbery went wrong. Sherri's father, Nels Rasmussen, thought the killing was personal. His daughter told him about an ex-girlfriend of John's, a "lady-cop" who harassed Sherri. This woman showed up unannounced at the house and threatened their relationship even at Sherri's job.

Investigators ignored this lead, maybe to protect themselves. Stephanie Lazarus (pictured), who Sherri worried about, was with the LAPD. Forensic evidence, including a bite mark swab from Sherri's arm, was gathered, but the case stalled. Nels Rasmussen tried to pay for DNA testing after reading about DNA technology, but the evidence vanished.

In 2001, LA's Cold Case Homicide Unit reviewed Sherri's case as routine work. They found the misplaced swab in the coroner's freezer and ran tests. The results showed no DNA matches in the database. However, the bite mark DNA did match a woman.

Stephanie Lazarus was not named a suspect. A cold case investigator finally linked a file note about John's ex-girlfriend to the female DNA in 2009. Stephanie Lazarus, who later held a high post in the LAPD's art theft department, was questioned to help detectives. After a friendly chat, Stephanie Lazarus was arrested for Sherri's murder. A secret DNA test on Stephanie already matched the crime scene DNA.

Stephanie and John never...Boyfriend and girlfriend. They had a sexual relationship after meeting in college, but it stopped when Sherri entered. When Stephanie saw John planned to marry Sherri, she became upset. She visited John to tell him she loved him. They had sex, but John saw it as a final goodbye before marrying Sherri.
