    Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie (September 9, 1941 – October 12, 2011) was an American computer scientist. Ritchie created the C programming language and the Unix operating system and B programming language with colleague Ken Thompson. The ACM awarded Ritchie and Thompson the Turing Award in 1983, the IEEE awarded the Hamming Medal in 1990, and President Bill Clinton gave the National Medal of Technology in 1999. Ritchie headed the Lucent Technologies System Software Research Department until he retired in 2007. Ritchie wrote the "R" in K&R C and is known by his username dmr.
