William Henry Gates III was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington. He grew up in an upper-middle-class family that emphasized education. Gates showed early competitiveness and innovative thinking. His interest in computers started at Lakeside School when he was thirteen, where he met Paul Allen, his future business partner. The two spent time exploring machine potential, building a passion that shaped their future. In 1975, Gates left Harvard University.

Charles Simonyi (Hungarian: Simonyi Károly; born September 10, 1948) is a Hungarian-born American software architect. He started and led Microsoft's applications group, building the first versions of the Microsoft Office suite. He founded and led Intentional Software, which Microsoft acquired in 2017. Simonyi became the fifth space tourist and the second Hungarian in space aboard Soyuz TMA-10 in April 2007. In March 2009, he made a second trip aboard Soyuz TMA-14.

Thomas Knoll is an American software engineer who created Adobe Photoshop. He started developing image processing routines in 1988. After creating the first core routines, Knoll showed them to his brother, John Knoll, who worked at Industrial Light and Magic. John liked the work, suggested new features, and pushed Tom to bundle them with a graphical user interface. In 1989, John sold the program to Adobe Systems, which released it as Photoshop.
