Anime genres like yaoi and yuri, also known as BL and GL, feature queer characters. While these genres are cool in their own right, they can include unrealistic tropes and aren't widely consumed by anime fans. Queer characters exist outside of BL and GL anime, though. Mainstream anime still has a way to go with LGBTQ+ representation, but many popular series include queer, lesbian, and/or gay characters. Here's a list of these characters from non-BL and non-GL anime. Vote for your favorite LGBTQ+ anime characters!
