Riddle:
Twelve men stand on an island. Eleven weigh the same. One weighs slightly different. You use a seesaw three times. Find the odd man.
Answer:
Use the seesaw toweigh islandersWeigh 1-4 against 5-8. This gives three possible outcomes:
1-4 weigh the same as 5-8.
1-4 weigh heavier than 5-8.
1-4 weigh lighter than 5-8.
If 1-4 is heavier, one in 1-4 weighs more, or one in 5-8 weighs less. Also, men 9-12 weigh the standard weight; they are neither heavier nor lighter.
Weigh 1, 2, and 5 against 3, 6, and 9. If the scale tips the same way, either 1 or 2 is heavier, or 6 is lighter. Then weigh 1 against 2. The side that drops is heavier. If neither side drops, 6 is the lighter one.
If the second weighing tips the opposite way, either 3 is heavier or 5 is lighter. Weigh 5 against 12. If 5 goes up, 5 is lighter; if it stays level, 3 is heavier. If the second weighing balances, the first weighing told you either 4 was heavier or 7 or 8 was lighter. Now weigh 7 against 8. If one side goes up, it is heavier; if they balance, 4 is the heavier one.
