About this list

Bears may have cute cubs, but don't be fooled. As Leonardo Dicaprio's character learned in The Revenant, approaching a bear cub is a bad idea. Every bear species demands respect - and fear. Their massive size and killing power make them a force to be reckoned with. Despite their cute appearance, bears are the largest carnivores on land and top their ecosystems as alpha predators. Most bear species are aggressive and territorial, using their sharp claws and teeth to defend themselves. They mainly eat berries, fish, and other local food, but will attack humans if threatened. All bear species can be deadly, and it's wise to fear them - especially the ones on this list.

    Polar Bear
    Polar BearScience Medicine

Size:Polar bears are the largest bear species. They weigh up to 1,534 lbs (700 kg) and stand nearly 10 feet (3 meters) tall.

Location:They live in the polar regions inside the Arctic Circle.

Distinguishing Features: The white fur covers a polar bear's body. Some bears show brown coloring, likely from crossing with other bear species.

Why You Should Be Scared:Unless you spend much time on the ice flows, you might not worry much.
