About this list

Few people fear fish, likely because you have to be swimming to encounter one. Yet, many are afraid. Some fish species are scary and dangerous, lurking in nearby waters. Others are ugly and unsettling, even if they don't pose a threat to humans. It's natural to fear fish that attack or look creepy. If you're afraid, you can easily avoid them - just stay out of the water. Sharks, of course, are fish, but they're excluded from this list as they deserve their own. Even without sharks, plenty of scary fish species inhabit the ocean's shallow waters and darkest depths. You might spot these frightening fish while scuba diving or visiting your local aquarium. Though you can probably catch and eat some, beware - some could eat you right back.
