He spoke little to others, staying as still as possible while taking in the slow physical change. After the makeup crew finished, Bower went to a pitch-black room. He sat alone for half an hour until filming time arrived.
After days of this behavior, Bower started to fear the villain inside him. He shared his worries with co-star Matthew Modine. Modine only praised him for the amount of character work he did.

CGI plays a large part in the world of.Stranger Things. For the Season 4 villain Vecna, the Duffer brothers used practical effects almost entirely. They hired special makeup effects artist Barrie Gower. Gower's company, BGFX, which he runs with his wife Sarah Gower, made the Night King from.Game of Thrones.Gower told.BloodyDisgusting.com.Practical effects achieved Vecna's nature-inspired look almost entirely.
We used many photos of sea life. We used all kinds of different fish and many things related to trauma references. This included bruising on the skin, pale skin tones, and looking at vines and other things. The texture and surface quality were key; his skin looked pitted and smooth in places. We used references from the real world and fantasy.
Actor Jamie Campbell Bower plays the character in both his monstrous and human forms. Bower had about 25 prosthetic pieces glued to his entire body every day for about 20 days of shooting. The whole process took six to eight and a half hours. He then spent another hour removing the appliances after each day of filming.
