The world is full of fascinating places to visit and explore, yet some can be endlessly disappointing. Big cities, no matter how unique, historic, or interesting, just can't please some people. Every place on Earth has something to complain about if you look hard enough. For a certain type of traveler, maybe that's part of the experience. Here are cities that surprised us with visitor disappointment.
About this list
- 1
Hollywood, California, USAPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/Mondo114:
Hollywood is disappointing. People traveling the world see it differently than reality. It is not what you expected.
And Redditor u/ScienceMomCO:
I grew up in the LA suburbs. I was disappointed by Hollywood the first time I visited. Skip Hollywood; there are better spots in Southern California.
1,223 - 2
Dubai, United Arab EmiratesPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/wric84:
I came to say Dubai. I spent 10 days there while passing through. I had enough after 24 hours. Too many malls. No culture.
And Redditor u/mal1k7:
I am glad people despise it. I lived and grew up there before Canada accepted me. That country built itself on the cheap labor of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
1,045 - 3
Wuhan, ChinaPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/kjthehague:
I moved to Wuhan in 2011. I saw a beautiful university with a clean lake. That lake turned out to be a trash dump. The whole city stayed under smog and construction. Wuhan has not improved in recent years.
857 - 4
Atlantic City, New Jersey, USAPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/User_492006:
Atlantic City is much dirtier and run down than I thought.
And Redditor u/flowerpotss:
I grew up in Jersey. I forgot Atlantic City is just a few streets and a boardwalk.
830 - 5
Roswell, New Mexico, USAPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/manny130:
Roswell, New Mexico. No one in town knows everyone outside thinks of UFOs. It is a terrible town with nothing to do. There is nothing to do outside the town for hours.
691 - 6
Austin, Texas, USAPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/DontShootTheFood:
Austin, Texas. I lived there in the '90s; it was good. Now it is an overcrowded, overpriced mess.
587 - 7
Jackson, Mississippi, USAPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/FarmerSenior9051:
Jackson, Mississippi. Everyone thinks it is bad, but it is truly bad.
535 - 8
Branson, Missouri, USAPlaces TravelFrom a former Redditor:
Branson, Missouri felt like a place if wish.com existed.
Redditor u/crdawson91added:
Living thirty minutes from Branson, it takes thirty minutes to get there. Then, it is just a Cracker Barrel turned into a town.

508 - 9
Beijing, ChinaPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/Teapigs1984:
Beijing. I arrived at the end of a trans-Mongolian rail trip, seeing many great places. It was a huge letdown. I felt scared by the armed security everywhere. I fought many scammers. I did not like being touched or laughed at on the subway (I am a white European with curly hair). Overall, it was hard despite the amazing sights.
456 - 10
Marrakesh, MoroccoPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/legshampoo:
I hate Marrakesh, though everyone loves it. Before 2000, it felt amazing. Now, it seems like a Disneyland version of culture for Western tourists. Ali Baba costumes pretend to be desert nomads. Half the "handmade goods" are cheap junk from China. Scammers approach you every block; you cannot walk twenty feet without an approach. The city acts only as a front to grab tourist cash. People love it, but that is my view.

429 - 11
Nashville, Tennessee, USAPlaces TravelFrom a formerRedditor:
I choose modern-day Nashville, TN. College visits were fun before the "boom." I thought about moving there after grad school because the cost of living matched my location then. Now, it costs too much. Tourists and influencers overrun it. The charm is gone. It shifted from a relaxed place with character to a crowded commercial trap.
387 - 12
Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USAPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/jessly1228:
I live about an hour and a half from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. People travel there for "authentic Amish shopping." Most Amish shops stock wholesale products made overseas. Some spots are good, but it mostly feels like a tourist trap.
382 - 13
Orlando, Florida, USAPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/TheMeccaNYC:
Orlando, Florida. Do not waste time going there. I do not understand why people like Orlando.
358 - 14
Edmonton, Alberta, CanadaPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/Suspicious_Sir_1515:
Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. It smells, it is flat, and there are no views. I did not expect much upon arrival; I thought it would be a dull city. It exceeded my expectations in the worst way.
325 - 15
Paris, FrancePlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/Idontknowthosewords:
Paris was dirty. I did not expect the French to look down on an American. I believed the American rom-com movie version of Paris.
306 - 16
Naples, ItalyPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/Gjilli:
Naples, I think the best way I could describe the city center is as a sticky McDonalds table.
And Redditor u/WoodSteelStone:
I visited Naples as a (F19) student in the late '80s. Leaving the train station, two men offered me money for a pint of my blood. They planned to take it in a white transit van nearby.
172 - 17
Niagara Falls, New York, USAPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/youburyitidigitup:
Niagara Falls. I thought the falls were in a national park, not a city. The whole area felt like a giant shopping mall.
166 - 18
Las Vegas, Nevada, USAPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/themeanlantern:
I hated Las Vegas intensely. It was dry, trashy, and smoky. Ugh.
And Redditor u/BoilermakerCBEX-E:
Everything there is expensive. Traveling anywhere is a hassle. Alcohol is everywhere.
131 - 19
Venice, ItalyPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/ChibiRedgrave:
I always say Venice. It has beautiful architecture and history. But the humidity is bad. The water is filthy. It is too crowded. Gift stands sell the same cheap things in every corner.
-68 - 20
Pompeii, ItalyPlaces TravelFrom Redditor u/GluttonAsteroth:
Pompeii. The atmosphere felt toxic. The local fair was bland. Nothing showed at the local amphitheater. Visitors seem to be sleeping. However, the neighborhood is quiet.
