Rom-coms get a bad rap for clichés and predictability, but they have a comforting quality that keeps audiences believing in love. Every genre has its duds, and rom-coms are no exception. Some are so bad they're unbearable, even for die-hard romantics, who find them unbelievable or painful to watch. Here are the lowest lows of the rom-com genre that drive even the biggest fans away.
About this list
- 1
GigliMoviesWe dump 'Gigli' because of its flaws.Widely regarded as one of the worst films ever, it nearly wrecked Ben Affleck's Hollywood career.GigliThe film sounds like someone poured used cat litter into a typewriter. "It's turkey time… Gobble, gobble," is an actual line from the movie.
Affleck plays Larry Gigli, a low-level mobster on a kidnapping mission. His boss distrusts him, so he sends Ricki (Jennifer Lopez) to lead. Larry and Ricki fall in love, yet Affleck and Lopez show no on-screen chemistry, which is odd for a real-life couple then.
272 - 2

We dump 'The Hottie and the Nottie'.Nate (Joel David Moore) wants to date his crush, Cristabel (Paris Hilton). She only agrees if he finds a date for her "less-attractive" friend, June (Christine Lakin). Later, after June gets a makeover, Nate develops feelings for her.
Words fail to capture the disaster this movie is.The Hottie and the Nottie. From the awful title to the offensive depictions and shallow beauty standards, this rom-com should be forgotten. A dumpster fire describes this film well enough.
254 - 3
All About SteveMoviesWe dump 'All About Steve'.A blind date pairs Mary Horowitz (Sandra Bullock) with handsome cameraman Steve Miller (Bradley Cooper). Mary falls for Steve, but he does not reciprocate. So, she stalks him. That is the whole story.
This film sends the wrong message: if someone doesn't love you, force your way into their life until they accept you or you realize love exists elsewhere. Even ignoring the fact that Steve needs a restraining order,All About SteveThis film is also cringy and annoying; it fails to use the talents of its two main actors.
168 - 4
Accidental LoveMoviesWe dump 'Accidental Love'.Waitress Alice Eckle (Jessica Biel) gets a nail in her brain, causing strange actions. She cannot get surgery because she lacks health insurance. She travels to Washington, DC, to talk to congressman Howard Birdwell (Jake Gyllenhaal), and they fall in love.
Accidental LoveThe film tries to discuss national healthcare system failures but remains unsure. It does not mention the romance between the leads. The director, David O. Russell, made the film so unfocused and unfunny that he used a fake name.Stephen Greene.Stephen Greene.
146 - 5
The SwitchMoviesWe dump 'The Switch'.Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) plans to become pregnant through a sperm donor. Her best friend, Wally (Jason Bateman), likes Kassie and wants to be the donor, but gets down when Kassie chooses someone else. While drunk, Wally swaps the sperm with his own. Years later, Kassie's son looks very much like Wally's, who forgot what he did.
Wally swapping sperm without Kassie's knowledge is invasive and deeply unsettling. This story does not start with a cute or funny premise. Wally should be locked up, not trying to start a relationship with Kassie.
131 - 6
On the LineMoviesWhy We Would Dump It:Kevin (Lance Bass) meets a girl on a train and instantly falls for her. His lack of confidence stops him from getting her name or number. His friends launch a campaign to find the mystery girl.
Bass is fantastic in 'N Sync,' a boy band music legend. He lacks credibility and presence as a leading man. He has almost no chemistry with his romantic co-star, Emmanuelle Chriqui. On the LineThis is a sweet concept, but the cast is wrong.
91 - 7
My Boss's DaughterMoviesWhy We Would Dump It:Cliché after cliché describes the situation. My Boss's DaughterTom Stansfield (Ashton Kutcher) has a crush on his boss's daughter, Lisa Taylor (Tara Reid). He house-sits and enters a wild adventure. Drug dealers notice the adventure, but it brings him closer to Lisa.
Neither romantic, funny, nor mildly enjoyable. My Boss's DaughterThe story stumbles along, offensive and awkward. Viewers will want to call HR and file a report for being forced to watch this.
87 - 8
Something BorrowedMoviesWhy We Would Dump It: Something BorrowedRachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) has a long-time crush on Dex (Colin Egglesfield). The problem? Dex is about to marry Rachel's best friend, Darcy (Kate Hudson).
Ultimately, Something BorrowedThis film feels 'borrowed,' acting as a riff on 'My Best Friend's Wedding.'My Best Friend's WeddingIt lacks the personality, funniness, and interesting characters of the former. Instead, the film shows unlikable characters, a soulless story, and cast members acting in different movies.
38 - 9
Serving SaraMoviesWhy We Would Dump It: Joe (Matthew Perry) serves Sara (Elizabeth Hurley) divorce papers. Sara charms Joe and makes a deal. They travel across the country to save her fortune. This adventure brings them closer.
Perry and Hurley struggle to find chemistry. Their bickering sounds cynical and mean-spirited, not playful or funny. The story is also boring and tedious. This rom-com belongs in dusty film history.
33 - 10
Failure to LaunchMoviesWhy We Would Dump It: Failure to LaunchParents hire Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker) to help their son, Tripp (Matthew McConaughey), leave home. While Paula helps Tripp build self-esteem, Tripp and Paula genuinely fall for each other.
McConaughey and Parker get stuck in an unbelievable story. The story does not know if it is romantic, funny, or a first draft that made it to production.Failure to LaunchThis film is also an equally apt description of the whole movie.
28 - 11
Down to YouMoviesWhy We Would Dump It: Down to YouTwo college coeds, Al (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Imogen (Julia Stiles), fall in love right away. Soon, their young love faces many problems, and they start separating.
The film's message is simple: sometimes, people meet too young and need to grow up before having a real relationship. That message has truth, but watching a film with so little charisma feels like a chore. Both Al and Imogen act like complete narcissists and unpleasant people; seeing them get back together at the end is disappointing.
26 - 12
Good Luck ChuckMoviesWhy We Would Dump It: Charlie Kagan (Dane Cook) has a rare, almost magical quality. Every ex-girlfriend finds true love after their relationship ends. While women see him as a good-luck charm, he finds it a curse when he meets the person he thinks is the one.
On one hand,Good Luck ChuckThe setup is new for this genre. But the jokes are weak afterward, and the movie fails to make the viewer root for the main couple. The result is a movie that simply isn'tfun to watch.
26 - 13
Because I Said SoMoviesWhy We Would Dump It: Helicopter parent Daphne (Diane Keaton) does not want her youngest daughter Milly (Mandy Moore) to find love in the wrong place. So, Daphne puts an online ad to find the perfect man for her daughter. Nothing goes smoothly.
While Because I Said Sotries to show Daphne's wrong actions come from real care. But it treats Milly like she cannot make her own choices. Also, the film lacks laughs for such a strange idea and feels stuck in slow motion the whole time.
11 - 14
What Happens in VegasMoviesWhy We Would Dump It: Joy (Cameron Diaz) and Jack (Ashton Kutcher) meet in Las Vegas by chance. A party night leads them to get married. The next day, before they can divorce, Joy gives Jack a quarter, and he wins big at the slots. This sudden money creates a problem; both feel they deserve the cash. A lawyer says they must live together for six months to claim their share in the divorce.
Bad performances fill every scene. Neither Kutcher nor Diaz convince as a couple. They look like someone off-screen is holding their paychecks over a fire, threatening to cut them if they don't say the bland words on the page. At the same time,What Happens in Vegasshows every turn and twist so everyone knows what happens in Vegas.
6 - 15
Shallow HalMoviesWhy We Would Dump It: Jack Black's Hal is shallow, only dating women he finds physically perfect. Meeting life coach Tony Robbins hypnotizes Hal to see the "inner beauty" in women he previously ignored.
The film suggests beauty is only skin-deep. It loses all feeling by using toilet humor and lowbrow situations. Also, let's sayShallow Hal.Shallow Hal has not aged well. Every gag focuses on body shaming to some degree.
-2 - 16
This Means WarMoviesWhy We Would Dump It:This Means War.CIA agents and best friends, Franklin (Chris Pine) and Tuck (Tom Hardy), both fall for Lauren (Reese Witherspoon). They fight to win her affection.
The concept works, but it does not develop. Loud action scenes are fine. The relationship between the leads never builds care for the audience.
-52 - 17
The Ugly TruthMoviesWhy We Would Dump It:The Ugly Truth.Host Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler) makes a deal with producer Abby Richter (Katherine Heigl). He can get her dream man if she follows his blunt advice. They predictably fall for each other.
The ugliest truth is the movie tries too hard to be edgy. There is hardly any laughter. The audience struggles to root for Abby and Mike, who are both unlikable. The formulaic parts are the only good parts, which does not help.
