In sci-fi horror movies, a mad scientist often sparks chaos by splicing human and alien DNA, transplanting an animal brain into a human body, or creating a race of fish people. The result is a monster - an alien, mutant, or biomechanical horror - that wreaks havoc. If people had left well enough alone, everything would be fine. But for viewers, this meddling makes for great sci-fi/horror movies. Classics like Alien and The Fly follow this formula. Here are some lesser-known sci-fi shockers that fit the bill. MimicMoviesYears before Guillermo del Toro won the Academy.Awards for best picture and best director. His first English-language film, this sci-fi shocker nearly cost him his Hollywood studio job. Set in the near future, scientists in Manhattan develop a special "Judas breed" of cockroaches to kill roaches spreading a deadly disease across the city, taking countless children's lives.
The new Judas insects evolve just a little too fast. They rapidly mimic and hunt much larger prey—humans.Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds, this 2017 film slipped under many people's notice despite its star power. The BlobMoviesIn the original 1958 version ofIt turns out the blob began as a biological weapon that grew too dangerous, so it was launched into space. Now it returns, threatening to wipe out a town and then the world., starring Steve McQueen, the huge jello mold from outer space has no specific origin story. It appears one day in a meteor. It begins absorbing everything nearby. The 1988 remake, with a screenplay co-written byThat is what happens in "Species".'s Frank Darabont, shows where the blob comes from quickly. It is not another planet.
The blob began as a biological weapon. It grew too dangerous, so people launched it into space. Now it returns, threatening to destroy a town, then the entire world.

SpeciesMoviesMovies teach us lessons for daily life. For example, "If an alien intelligence—about which you know nothing—sends you alien DNA, splicing it with human DNA right away is probably not a good idea."
That is what happens inSpecies, a 1995 film features creature designs by H.R. Giger. Giger also designed the Xenomorphs from theAlienseries. The creatures Giger designed are not friendly. When Sil, the result of the human/alien DNA splicing experiment, escapes, a team of scientists and specialists tracks her down. Forest Whitaker, Alfred Molina, Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, and Natasha Henstridge play Sil. Michelle Williams appears as a younger Sil.

Deep Blue SeaMoviesScientists run deepwater experiments on sharks seeking to cure Alzheimer's in humans. Do not make the sharks super-intelligent before you do. That is the mistake scientists made in Deep Blue SeaThis film shows its super-intelligent sharks attacking and killing the research station crew, one by one, in scenarios that get harder and harder.
The film might be silly, but it has a great cast. Samuel L. Jackson, Thomas Jane, Stellan Skarsgård, and LL Cool J are among them. Watch Samuel L. Jackson give a rousing speech to the other survivors; that scene works well.

UnderwaterMoviesSometimes the issue is not messing with creatures we should avoid, but messing around in placeswhere we should not be messing. Those places often house creatures whose attention we really do not want. Consider this 2020 film starring Kristen Stewart. A drilling operation on the ocean floor accidentally wakes up some unwelcome marine life.
Spoilers reveal much more, but fans of cosmic horror will not be disappointed. They will see hints that waking up this specificmarine life was the company's original plan...

Alien: ResurrectionMoviesThe fourth filmin theAlienThe Alien saga gets a bad reputation, but acclaimed French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet directed and Joss Whedon co-wrote the script. This makes it an oddity—ooey, gooey, and fascinating. The movie sets 200 years after the events ofAlien 3, ResurrectionThis film shows scientists experimenting on a clone of Ripley. They use DNA samples gathered before her death.
They also cloned some of the aliens using these samples. The cloned Ripley and the aliens grown from her DNA are things they should not mess with, as the film's ending shows.

Attack the BlockMoviesThe aliens in Attack the Blockwere coming anyway—falling like meteors toward a London housing block. If the main characters had not chased down the first creature and hauled its body back to the "weed room" at the top of their building, the aliens might not have arrived there— at least not immediately.
Once they learn their mistake, they use that knowledge to draw the aliens to them for a final fight. This works out well for the small protagonists in this overlooked gem starring John Boyega (Star Wars) and futureDoctor Whostar Jodie Whittaker.

LifeforceMoviesDo not mess with aliens when you find them, no matter how much they look like a nude Mathilda May. Movies teach us this lesson repeatedly, yet people in movies keep doing it. Tobe Hooper's (Poltergeist.Lifeforce appears in the list of Underrated Sci-Fi Horror Movies.Texas Chain Saw Massacre. This 1985 sci-fi horror film.Lifeforce.A spacecraft crew finds a massive 150-mile alien ship near Halley's Comet. They bring back three nude, humanoid forms they find inside.
One person wakes up. She starts draining the life force from everyone she meets. This leads to an apocalyptic fight on London streets.

DoomMoviesThis 2005 film adapts the video game. It keeps the theme: some things people should not mess with. Here, that is DNA from alien skeletons on Mars that possess a 24th chromosome.
The Union Aerospace Corporation splices this new genetic material into humans. They create strange mutants. These mutants escape and wipe out everyone at the Mars research facility. The film contains much cheese, but it has strong parts. One part is a long first-person scene that copies the video game style well.

The PredatorMoviesShane Black made this sequel years later.Predator.The Predator franchise uses the original name or adds "the" for sequels. These alien hunters return to Earth, fighting a new group of army outcasts in suburbia instead of the jungle or city.
The film shows off-color humor. Goofy battles occur with big aliens. Space ships crash. Government cover-ups abound. Government captures a Predator, experiments on it. They have never seen a movie, unaware things will go wrong.

RampageMoviesThis film adapts the 1986 arcade game.Rampage.In 2018, this film stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The story mirrors the original game, though the corrupt genetics company is Energyne instead of Scumlabs.
They conduct DNA experiments turning animals into kaiju-sized versions of themselves. These mutations give them abilities they lacked, like regeneration and gliding for the wolf. This is what wolves needed.
The company plans to make the giant animals more aggressive. That never ended badly for anyone. The movie is fun with city-smashing action and weird monster designs. It is also very gory for a PG-13 rating.

PiranhaMoviesPiranha achieved massive success.Jaws.In 1975, Jaws spawned many copies. Joe Dante's 1978 filmPiranha.Scientists experiment on the dangerous titular fish to help them survive in freshwater and become hungrier for use against the Viet Cong. The fish escape a river in America, ending up at a summer camp and a riverside amusement park.
This early work from Dante, which focused not just on genetically modified fish, became something else.GremlinsThe film also features other fishy creatures, including a stop-motion fish man resembling Ray Harryhausen's creations.

Island of TerrorMoviesSometimes good intentions lead to horrific results. This 1966 British sci-fi film stars Peter Cushing. Oncologists seeking a cancer cure accidentally create a new life form from the silicon atom.
These blob-like creatures split, feeding on animal bones by gruesomely sucking them out while the victims are still alive. The scenes of deflated human bodies are grim for a 1966 movie, and the creatures are a B-movie hit.

CreatureMoviesRidley Scott'sAlienThe film spawned many successors and copies, including this 1985 imitation by director William Malone.House on Haunted HillThe plot involves a crew landing badly on Titan, Saturn's largest moon. There, they discover a rival team is trying to steal the remains of an alien organism that is less dead than it looks.
Highlights include a strange turn by the notorious weirdo.actor Klaus KinskiThe alien uses parasites to remotely control its victims' bodies, adding a zombie movie element to the alien story. This includes a warning not to take dead bodies found in space.

Movie characters learn slowly. The 1954 filmCreature from the Black LagoonArchaeologists should not have messed with the creature's habitat. Yet in the 1955 film, they captured the creature and took it to Florida for display at Ocean Harbor. That ended badly.
Yet inThe Creature Walks Among UsThe 1956 film tries something new.againThis time, they capture the gill-man and surgically alter him so he can breathe air. This also ends badly for everyone, including the gill-man who just wanted to be left alone.
