About this list

Tired of the Lazy Amnesia Plot Device in movies and TV shows? You're not alone. The familiar tale of boy meets girl, girl disappears under mysterious circumstances, and boy later discovers girl was just lost with amnesia is a worn-out trope. Using amnesia as a plot device is not the problem - it's when it's used as a cheap trick to resolve issues, revive dead storylines, or create conflict that it becomes an issue. This list exposes Hollywood's most blatant attempts to cheat their way out of solid storytelling with amnesia plot twists.

    Fast & Furious 6

The Fast & Furious franchise is no stranger to retcons.Fast and Furiousthe franchise isNo stranger to retcons. One of the largest films takes place in the sixth entry of the franchise.Fast & Furious 6..

In the series' fourth outing, Fast & FuriousFast & Furious.Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), a crew member and Dom (Vin Diesel)'s love interest, seemed to die in a car wreck. Two films later, the audience learns she did not die. Bad guys found her and let her join their crew because she conveniently forgot which side she was on. By the seventh installment, Letty miraculously recovered her lost memories.

Sometimes you eliminate a character too fast, too furiously. You have no choice but to use your Hollywood screenwriter's handbook for a cheap exit. Enter: the amnesia twist.

    Superman II

What areSuperman's most famous powers. He is super strong, fast, and invulnerable. He has laser vision and frost breath. He can fly. He can wipe a person's memory with one kiss.

You might not remember that power. Superman gave you a kiss, or maybe it was a cheap plot device added to the end ofSuperman II.so writers could return to the status quo and make Lois Lane forget Clark Kent's alter ego.

Superhero writers favor the status quo. Many writers report trouble sleeping unless Peter Parker is a 23-year-old photographer, all original costume-wearers are alive and active, and the main Avengers roster has rejoined the team.

In fairness, the super kiss didSuperman appears once before in the comics.but who cares?Silly things happen in the comics..

    Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 2.Harry Osborn (James Franco) discovered his father was the Green Goblin all along.Spider-Man 3.Writers decided to focus screen time on two other villains instead. They had to create an exit for the whole Harry Osborn/Green Goblin situation.

Harry chases Spider-Man at the start of the third film. He gets hurt during the fight and develops amnesia. This takes him out of the game until the end, where he miraculously recovers and helps Peter Parker.

    Justice League

Putting all favorite superheroes into one big summer blockbuster creates a lot of money. A smaller company than Warner Bros. might have done that route, but not the Warner brothers. They chose to try art and create aJustice League. The film avoids using Superman for most of its running time.

Superman has alwaysbeen considered a problem for writers. His power set equals "all the X-Men put together." His presence makes a team seem a little redundant. Zack Snyder and others handled this by killing him inBatman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeZack Snyder and others handled this issue by killing him inBatman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeJustice League does not bring him back to life until deep into.Justice League appears 13 times in movies and TV shows that use amnesia. The film's runtime. Batman uses the mother box to bring him back. Superman suffers amnesia, which targets his teammates.

    Miami Vice

Miami Vice ran for three seasons solving crimes on Miami beaches. Writers wanted to spice up the police procedural. They gave Sonny Crockett amnesia, then made him the main antagonist in the fourth season. They are not doctors, but that is how amnesia works.

This move is outlandish. Serialized television would be more fun if this exact move became a trope. More shows should follow this path. Imagine Chandler spent a season on Friends.Friends appears 13 times in movies and TV shows that use amnesia.Chandler became a villainous, mustache-twirling kingpin.

    Kingsman: The Golden Circle

When a movie hits, you must study what made it successful to make more hits. This makes you and the studio more money. Sometimes, you find the lead actors' chemistry drove the success. What if you killed one of those actors during the hit? You scrap your original plans for a sequel and force that character back into your film.Kingsman: The Golden Circle lets you scrap your original plans.force that character back into your film.

The second movie reveals Statesman kept him alive this entire time, having developed a cure for head shots.

Harry Hart had amnesia. Why did he not contact his friend Eggsy (Taron Egerton)? Why did no one know he was alive? He had amnesia. Why couldn't Statesman contact Kingsman? They did not know his organization because of his amnesia. Why was this movie not as big a hit as the one before? We cannot recall.

    24

24 appears 13 times in movies and TV shows that use amnesia. This writing exercise pretends to be a TV series. Each episode takes one hour, and every season equals one day. The writers had to make this single day much more exciting than any day in history.

Teri Bauer (Leslie Hope), Jack Bauer's (Kiefer Sutherland) wife, thinks she watches her daughter die in a car crash. Then, she suffers dissociative amnesia for several episodes. Like real people, she gets her memory back as soon as the plot needs it.

With one day and 24 hours of plot twists, some characters must lose their memory.

    Desperately Seeking Susan

Desperately Seeking SusanThis movie has many events. Star-crossed lovers post ads to meet in a park. A syndicate tries to capture one of them. A woman follows the romance. She gets involved at the meeting, takes the woman's jacket, is mistaken for the other woman, gets hit, loses her memory, and ends up believing sheisthe woman she was mistaken for.

It is fun. Still, if this is not using amnesia cheaply to push the plot, what is?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

InStar Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, C-3PO must make a huge sacrifice. To translate an old Sith text, C-3PO defies his programming and wipes his memory. Only one character sees the whole Skywalker saga, but they have no memory. That would be devastating.

Instead, R2-D2 shows he has a backup of C-3PO's memory. So, forget that 'meaningful sacrifice' idea.

    NCIS

During Season 3 ofNCIS, Gibbs (Mark Harmon), the show's lead character, gets into a car accident and loses his memory. This is bad on any day. It is worse since he holds information on an upcoming terrorist strike.

The rest of his team spends an episode trying to bring back his memories. This amnesia caused no lasting damage to the character. It just added extra episode drama.

    X-Men Origins: Wolverine

In defense ofX-Men Origins: WolverineWolverine's amnesia problem goes deeper than one movie.

Wolverine's backstory acts like Schrodinger's cat; it is everything all the time.Whatever happened toThe writers keep details vague so they can add more later. Want to make a new X-Men villain more evil? What if they helped create Weapon X? Introduce a new hero with deep ties to current characters. They were part of Weapon X.

The time came for the X-Men.X-MenFilmmakers addressed Wolverine's backstory. They avoided the plot hole risk of not mentioning 'why was none of this ever mentioned?' Instead, they created a whole movie's worth of events. The film ended with Wolverine taking an adamantium bullet to the head. This stops memory loss, plot holes, and X-Men origin films.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Prequels are hard. How do you have a big story affecting the world that the later movies never mention? One option is for the lead character to use a spell to make everyone forget the events. No one remembering it avoids a plot hole.

Newt Scamander used this exact move. He ended his adventure by wiping the city's memory, including his friend Jacob Kowalski.

The sequel failed to work well with the spell, but that is irrelevant.
