About this list

Anime characters often suffer more than just ordinary misfortune. To drive a hero's story, they must endure something supernatural - like an evil spell. Anime curses create tragic backstories and motivations, with creators getting inventive. The worst curses, such as Another's Class 3-3 Curse, involve gruesome deaths. Others, like Fruits Basket's Sohma Zodiac curse, are less violent but still harrowing, leading to isolation and abuse. Some curses have a bright side: Sophie Hatter in Howl's Moving Castle learns about herself after rapidly aging from 19 to 90. Curses can seriously enhance a story, no matter the form they take.
