About this list

Rom-coms are full of awful boyfriends, but the leading ladies can be just as bad. They cheat, control, and exhibit bizarre behavior. Take Sarah from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Mrs. Griffith from Easy A, Maude from Harold and Maude, and Melissa from The Hangover - they're some of the worst girlfriends in rom-com history. Often, these toxic partners are the side love interests, not the main couple. But sometimes, they're the ones who end up with the guy. Rom-coms tend to age poorly, focusing on outdated dating nuances. Here are some of the worst rom-com girlfriends that you'd dump in a heartbeat if they pulled this nonsense in real life.

    Melissa - ‘The Hangover’

What Makes Her So Bad:Any partner who wants to control someone to the point where they are basically subservient is toxic and moves to emotional abuse. Stu's (Ed Helms) wife Melissa (Rachael Harris) shows this in The Hangover. The HangoverMelissa's control goes beyond emotional and straight into physical abuse.

The Worst Thing She's Done: Melissa uses sex as a weapon, stopping Stu from kissing her. Still, she cheats on him regularly.

Can We Fix Her?If Melissa wants to try dom and sub roles, she must discuss it beforehand with a safe word. Do not use it as a daily method to control someone who never asked to play this game.

    Meredith - 'The Parent Trap'

What Makes Her So Bad: Disliking and not wanting kids is fine. Trolling for single rich dads and pitting his children against him is not fine. Nick and Elizabeth do not win any parenting awards by choosing a kid and never telling the twins they have another parent or sibling. (Raise your hand if this divorce setup makes you think you will never see a parent again after a split.)

Nick's (Dennis Quaid) girlfriend Meredith (Elaine Hendrix) is a terrible materialistic woman. She plays a prank war with children, gaslights them, and causes a parental rift. This is class for someone so obsessed with class.

The Worst Thing She's Done:She tries to send Hallie (Annie) to a boarding school in Timbuktu. Then, she tells Nick to choose between her and his children. Good luck with that, lady. (We skip the fact that he gave up one of his kids for over a decade.)

Can We Fix Her? No. Ship her off to Timbuktu in her inflatable mattress.

    Sarah - 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'

What Makes Her So Bad: Sarah (Kristen Bell) cheated on her boyfriend Peter (Jason Segel) for a year. She then breaks up to be with a rock star who matches her narcissism with his self-obsession. Come on. His name is Aldous. Who thought this would work? They deserve each other, but both are so toxic they cannot stand each other.

The Worst Thing She's Done:Sarah cheating on Peter for a year is bad enough. Making a move out of jealousy the minute he starts to move on is worse. This sabotages a budding, healthier relationship.

Can We Fix Her? Date yourself, Sarah. Stop dragging other people into your self-absorbed vortex.

    Mrs. Griffith - 'Easy A'

What Makes Her So Bad: Cheating on your sweet, bleeding-heart English teacher husband is bad. Cheating on him with a barely-of-age teen is worse. Having an affair with your student as a counselor is as abhorrent as it gets, which is what Mrs. Griffith (Lisa Kudrow) does in Easy A. She hooks up with the student inside her office during school hours. The power dynamics here are skin-crawling.

The Worst Thing She's Done:Grooming a student whose mental health you manage is awful. Trying to get a 16-year-old to keep a secret from her favorite teacher is despicable.

Can We Fix Her?Get this woman away from underage kids right now. Maybe take away her psychology credentials? She needs more help than she offers.

    Clarice - 'It Takes Two'

What Makes Her So Bad:For science, read “Clarice” in Hannibal Lecter's voice. Many rich bachelors lack children. It baffles why step-monsters remain common on screen. Hate kids? Date a rich guy without them? That doesn't work for Clarice (Jane Sibbett).

Clarice looks down on those she deems beneath her, despite needing high class. She dates a guy she dislikes who has a child she hates and works a job she doesn't care about. Clarice must take that aggression out on her boyfriend's daughter. This is basically a cheap version of [missing text].The Parent Trap.

The Worst Thing She's Done: Like other step-monster stories, Clarice plans to send Alyssa to a Tibetan boarding school. She constantly threatens Alyssa, showing no hidden reasons. Clarice acts sweet to Roger (Steve Guttenberg). Things become physical when he leaves, and she tries to slap a child. Ms. Girl. Can you calm down?

Can We Fix Her?Time for a lesson from Mrs. Manners at a Tibetan boarding school. Does it have an age limit?

    Judith - 'Saving Silverman'

What Makes Her So Bad:Yes, even psychiatrists need therapists, especially for Dr. Judith (Amanda Peet). After she met Darren (Jason Biggs), she controlled his life. She forced him to repeatedly ditch his friends and burned his things. She treats strangers as cruelly as the boyfriend she just forced into dating him without talking to him.

The Worst Thing She's Done:Judith's attempts to control Darren worsen when she forces medical tests and makes him attend counseling sessions she runs. PSA: Psychiatry and therapy are different fields. But assume she is not good at either. Also?MajorConflict of interest. The profession is treated like a joke. This hits hard when she convinces J.D. (Jack Black) he is gay. That is not how it works. At all.

Can We Fix Her?Baby doll, you need counseling. But here is a tip: do not run the sessions yourself.

    Regina George - 'Mean Girls'

What Makes Her So Bad: Regina George (Rachel McAdams) manipulates her friends.andRegina must step in when she sees Aaron (Jonathan Bennett) flirting with Cady (Lindsay Lohan). Queen B's want what they cannot have, so Regina reclaims her ground. She does not even want that ground.

The Worst Thing She's Done: Regina manipulated Aaron back into a relationship. Then, Regina cheated on him repeatedly. Aaron found out after Cady tipped him off—Cady was in full Regina mode. This was awkward.

Can We Fix Her?Cady served Regina a harsh lesson after a bus hit her. Regina seems less intense now. Cady gave her a taste of her own medicine, which was too bitter. She might not change fully, but she took some steps. We can believe she moves from a raging sociopath to a self-obsessed narcissist who stops trying to ruin others' lives.

    Maggie - ‘Runaway Bride’

What Makes Her So Bad:If you are not ready for marriage, do not accept a proposal. Figure that out before the wedding day. Do not run from multiple grooms and keep their rings like a Golem. If you have done this to two men, seek therapy. Find out why you lead men on—you want connection but refuse to settle. Maggie (Julia Roberts) needs to fix herself before considering another wedding. She fails.

The Worst Thing She's Done:Ditching three fiancées at the altar and keeping their rings as trophies?

Can We Fix Her?:If you watch the end of the movie, fine. If you doubt this behavior stops because she found someone she likes, stay tuned for The Runaway Divorcé - coming to you ten years ago.

    Paula - 'Failure to Launch'

What Makes Her So Bad: Great relationships start when parents hire a woman to date their 35-year-old slacker son to spark independence. Adults can handle it by making him pay rent or kick him out. Tripp (Matthew McConaughey) is an adult. Do not bring solicitation into this. Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker) makes money 'dating' clients' sons to make them move out, then immediately dumps them.

The Worst Thing She's Done:Calculated manipulation to make someone fall for you and base big life choices on what they don't know is disgusting. Stop swooning when they fall for each other.

Can We Fix Her?Hire her a fake boyfriend to manipulate her into doing what you want. That is healthy.

Gen - 'To All The Boys I've Loved Before'

What Makes Her So Bad:Gen (Emilija Baranac) cannot handle Peter (Noah Centineo) not wanting her anymore. She cut her best friend out of her life over a spin the bottle game. This action made Lara Jean's life a living hell from then on. Even though Gen knows Peter doesn't love her like he loves Lara Jean, the bitter ex keeps trying to break them up. He lashes out, then thinks everything will be fine once she stops acting like a vindictive demon. (The worst part is she is right.)

The Worst Thing She's Done: Gen filmed her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend in a compromising position and sent the video to the whole school. She then strongly denied doing it and forced Peter to lie to Lara Jean about it because she was upset about her parents' divorce. Kay, Lara Jean's mom, died, and Gen does not pull this nonsense. Grow up. She never genuinely apologizes for the photo nor admits it to Lara Jean.

Can We Fix Her? The picture should have caused a permanent silent treatment from both characters. Still, Peter and Lara Jean's soft hearts seem to forgive her (ugh). Gen does seem to mature and calm down by the third film. She even convinces Lara Jean to attend NYU with her if that is what she wants. However, some things should not be forgiven.

    Maude - 'Harold and Maude'

What Makes Her So Bad: The minute an 80-year-old starts lusting after a 20-year-old they should: A. Troll the local nursing home for an actually suitable suitor and B. Never see that kid again if you have that much trouble controlling yourself. Nothing good comes from an 80-year-old woman pursuing an emotionally struggling kid fresh from boarding school. Yet, that is exactly what Maude (Ruth Gordon) does with Harold (Bud Cort). Also, he looks twelve.

The Worst Thing She's Done: The whole idea of dating a depressed 20-year-old who could be her great-grandson comes to mind.

Can We Fix Her? Do not let this woman near a high school because she will hunt as soon as this kid turns 25.

  • 12
    Susan - 'Big'

What Makes Her So Bad: Hey Susan, a pro tip: Sleeping with a 12-year-old is illegal and deeply creepy. Susan (Elizabeth Perkins) might not know Josh's (Tom Hanks) real age when they start dating, but she does not react properly when she learns it. She cares more that he might forget her than the fact she slept with a child. Regardless of not knowing then, any sensible, non-creepy person would have a total self-loathing breakdown, not creepy romantic moments with a child during an awkward goodbye.

The Worst Thing She's Done:Turning Josh away when he tries to kiss you isn't enough; you still kiss him on the forehead. Lady, put a permanent one-foot gap between you and this child before you never see him again.

Can We Fix Her?Hello, 9-1-1? We report a crime.

  • 13
    Gloria - 'Wedding Crashers'

What Makes Her So Bad: She is clingy, then she stalks someone after one hookup to plan two dozen more afternoon encounters daily. Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) unknowingly gets Gloria's (Isla Fisher) card, and she finds glory. She wants more than a few repeat performances—she demands this with an obsessive stranger danger attitude.

The Worst Thing She's Done: Gloria pushes her persistence too far. She escalates her aggression to a predatory, frankly scary level. Gloria does this.

Can We Fix Her? Perhaps. Some therapy seems necessary.

Soléne - 'The Idea of You'

What Makes Her So Bad: If you face a post-divorce scandal, buy a new car or take aEat, Pray, Lovetrip overseas. Do not date someone from your daughter's favorite childhood boy band. Spoiler: Hays (Nicholas Galitzine) is still a kid. Solène (Anne Hathaway) is very, verynot—despite looking stunning, Solène is 40 while her newboyfriend, who is 24. Plus, he's a rockstar with adult immaturity that shows when he buys out her studio and tries to win her over with material things. You are the adult, Solène. Act like it.The boy, emphasis on the boy, is 24. He is a rockstar with immature behavior for his age that shows when he buys out her studio and tries to woo her with material things. You are the grownup, Solène. Act like it.

The Worst Thing She's Done:Given her teenage daughter is being brutally bullied (what did she expect?) and Solène does not end things quickly, it is selfish. At minimum, they should have waited until she graduated high school to start any relationship. Reminder: Hayes is eight years older than Solène's teenage daughter. Reassess your life choices when your cheating ex-husband calls you out for poor parenting.

Can We Fix Her? The relationship idea is too much. A grown woman aware of that pursues a guy as young as Hayes is creepy. That is also creepy when men do this, so we avoid the double standard in this life.

Lucy - 'While You Were Sleeping'

What Makes Her So Bad: From the makers of ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ prepare for the newest part of Invasive Ways To Violate Someone Who's Sleeping. Some people leave crush notes in class; others use amnesia to enter their life and trick the object of their selfish affection into a fake relationship. Lucy (Sandra Bullock) enters inWhile You Were Sleeping. Yes, the story is as creepy as the title suggests. Lucy fails to correct a nurse who thinks Lucy is Peter's girlfriend and keeps the lie going.

The Worst Thing She's Done:Lucy orchestrates a fake relationship with an injured man who has amnesia. Lucy then falls for and pursues his brother. This action shows a lack of shame.

Can We Fix Her?She does not openly aim to be bad. However, someone needs to teach this woman about consent and boundaries.
