14 Reasons 'Attack On Titan' Is Overrated

About this list

Attack on Titan, or Shingeki no Kyojin, is a wildly popular anime based on Isayama Hajime's manga. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humans are under attack by humanoid monsters called Titans, forcing them to live behind walls. After 100 years of peace, the wall is breached, and teenagers Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert join the Survey Corps to fight back. Sounds great, but the show doesn't live up to its premise. Poor pacing and an unsatisfying plot are just a few reasons Attack on Titan falls short. Like Dragon Ball Z and the Zelda franchise, it has its share of flaws despite its popularity. Attack on Titan is one of the most overrated anime out there, and a closer look will show it doesn't deserve the hype. Warning: MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD. Even fans who think Eren lacks character development should check out the best Eren Yeager quotes.

The Series Really Drags In The Middle

The first few episodes of Attack on TitanAttack on TitanThese episodes are some of the best. The world-building is fantastic. Even if some characters seem cliché, you grow attached to them. There is drama, tension, suspense, and the start of character development; these are all good signs.

Once the Survey Corps forms and people fight Titans, the pace falters. World-building slows down. Some episodes feel disjointed, featuring too much explanation or fights that last too long. The mystery created early on remains unsolved by the end. This anime does not live up to its potential..

    Mikasa's Backstory Is Handled Terribly

Mikasa Ackerman, a main character in Attack on Titan,Attack on TitanAs a girl, her parents were murdered in front of her by slave traders. They then kidnapped her to sell her into sexual slavery. Eren rescues her after killing two kidnappers. A third slaver chokes Eren; Eren screams for Mikasa to fight, and she does. She kills the third kidnapper and saves Eren, letting them escape. Eren's parents adopt the orphaned Mikasa, and they form a sibling bond.

That incident never reappears. It explains why Mikasa clings to Eren and why she sometimes acts carelessly about death, but the issue is not mentioned beyond that.Parental deathParental death might be a common anime trope, but this is not.Sexual slavery.Mikasa was kidnapped to be sold into sexual slavery. Though the kidnappers failed, this happened, and the series ignores it entirely.

Ignoring this serious topic is one thing; the victim being Mikasa, a Japanese girl, makes it incredibly twisted. Remember, the Japanese imperial armyactively sold Korean women into sexual slavery. One character in Attack on Titan,Attack on TitanDot Pixis honors a general from the Imperial Japanese Army. This mirrors a Christian German author basing a good guy on a Nazi and writing a scene where a Christian German girl goes to Treblinka.

It Relies Too Much On Shock Value

Watching Titans eat human prey feels terrifying and exciting. The first ten or fifteen times it happens, though. After that, the concept weakens. Shock value holds the show up. Titans will keep eating people, but we want something other than Eren Yeager reacting with constant rage and disgust.

Free! Iwatobi Swim Clubcame out at the same time as Attack on TitanAttack on TitanMany viewers watched both shows together. Some viewers reacted more to crying teenage boys on a swim team than to child soldiers being eaten, showing an over-reliance on shock value and poor character growth.

The Titans Show Up The Instant They're Mentioned, After Being Absent For 100 Years

In the first episode of Attack on TitanAttack on TitanArmin gives a speech about complacency. He argues that the Titans showing up after 100 years does not mean they never will. A Titan kicks down the wall immediately after Armin finishes speaking.

Coincidences happen, sure, but relying on them to make a point is lazy writing.

The Biggest Ship Is Horrifying And Distracting

The most popular ship in Attack on Titan fandom is Eren x Levi.Attack on TitanEren x Levi, also called Ereri, is a terrible ship. Eren Jaeger is a severely traumatized 15-year-old child soldier. Levi Ackerman is his military commander, likely in his early 30s. This large age gap exists alongside Eren's legal obligation to obey Levi or face imprisonment or death.

A scene shows Levi savagely beating Eren to make a point, which the higher-ups accept. This setup does not create a good basis for a romantic relationship. Attack on Titan itself is not at fault.Attack on TitanThis pairing dominates the fandom. You struggle to get invested in the series past the first viewing because every search for the show name brings up a 30-something military commander with a teenage cadet.

It Might Just Be Japanese Military Propaganda

In 2010, Hajime Isayama, the series creator, stated...saidthat Dot Pixis, a military official in Attack on Titan, was based on a real military figure from Japanese history, Akiyama Yoshifuru.Attack on TitanIsayama claimed Akiyama Yoshifuru was “frugal and respectable.” The Yoshifuru was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army, the commander stationed in Korea during the Japanese occupation, and he helped with colonization.

Akiyama served as a general in the Imperial Japanese Army. He commanded the troops stationed in Korea during Japan's occupation and helped with its colonization. The Japanese Army forced Koreans to change their surnames to Japanese ones, tortured and experimented on Korean citizens, sold Korean women into sexual slavery, and made Korean men perform dangerous military tasks. The Japanese Army forced Koreans to change their surnames to Japanese ones, tortured and experimented on Korean citizens, sold Korean women into sexual slavery, and made Korean men perform dangerous military tasks.

Koreans generally see Akiyama as a war criminal. Given his history, it is understandable. Isayama approving of torture and slavery displeased the fandom, especially the Korean fandom, who sent him death threats.

The fact that Dot Pixis, one of the good characters in Attack on TitanAttack on TitanThe series was based on Akiyama. This makes enjoying the series hard. It also makes judging any political points it tries to make difficult.

    It's Relentlessly Grim And Cheerless

Given the popularity of gritty reboots of things like Pokémon, to Power Rangers, it's no surprise the Internet likes dark stuff.Pokémon.toPower Rangers. The Internet likes this because it likes dark stuff.dark stuff.A show taking on serious themes is fine. A series about man-eating monsters terrorizing humanity will be upsetting. That is expected, but Attack on Titan can be relentlessly negative.Attack on Titan.Attack on Titan can be absolutely relentless with its negativity.

Some jokes exist, but they always carry pain. Sasha is the potato girl; that is sometimes funny, though it is one-note. We see she obsesses over food because she starved half to death as a child. That is not funny now. The message about becoming a monster to defeat monsters is crushingly sad. The endless suffering loses its meaning because it becomes too intense.

The Cliffhanger At The End Is Just Annoying

At the end of season one, we learn the Female Titan is Annie, one of the cadets terrorizing the Survey Corps. Annie ends up trapped in a crystal, unable to explain her actions. Flashbacks show her dad supporting her, which only adds to the confusion. We do not find out what is wrong with the basement door Eren's creepy dad wants him to open.

It is unfair to expect a series to show all its secrets in the first season. We end without even a hint. The lack of a hint about Annie's motives feels more frustrating than suspenseful. The writers failed to create tension. The lack of a hint about Annie's motives creates frustration, not suspense. The writers failed to create suspense.

The Cosplay Options Are Either Boring Or Gross

At the height of Attack on Titan's popularity, fans show their love through cosplay at anime conventions. The nature of this cosplay limits options. Cosplayers have few choices, and those choices are bad.Attack on Titan's.Fans show love for the series through cosplay at anime conventions during Attack on Titan's popularity. The cosplay has issues. Talented or dedicated cosplayers only have a few options, and those options suck.

The first option is dressing like a Survey Corps member. This outfit includes boots, a jacket, suspenders, weapons, a cape, and a white shirt. If dressing as Levi, they need a cravat. This is fine, but they wear the same outfit over and over for every character. It is repetitive.Naruto.Cosplayers had nothing but the "Generic Konoha Ninja Uniform." This becomes boring after a while.

The second option is not boring, but it is really gross. Some cosplayers dress like Titans. They wear skinless jump suits and rubber masks decorated with fake muscle fiber and teeth. You do not want to see this every five minutes in the Dealer's Room.

The Manga Art Is Super Ugly

The anime has high production value. The sloppy manga art surprises people if they don't expect it. The "Female Titan" Makes No Sense

Before the “Female Titan” appears, all Titans are supposedly sexless. This makes her femininity unusual. The supposedly sexless Titans have masculine features: broad shoulders, square jaws, and all the typical markers of an XY chromosome setup besides genitals. Human biology dictates that females are the default, not males.

In utero, all fetuses develop along the female trajectory. All fetuses develop along the female trajectory. This continues until testosterone and androgen for XY babies, or estrogen and progesterone for XX babies, activate and finish the process. This explains why everyone is born with nipples, even though they only serve a biological function for those who can bear children.

Titan biology cannot perfectly mimic humans. However, masculine Titans are "sexless," while the female one is not. This shows males are the default. This is not logical. It is also sexist.

No matter what you think aboutAttack on TitanRegarding Attack on Titan, you must admit thatGuren no YumiyaLinked Horizon's theme song, Guren no Yumiya, is a rockin' track. The other three theme songs cannot be described the same.

The first end theme, Guren no Yumiya,Beautiful Cruel WorldYoko Hikasa’s Beautiful Cruel World is fine, but it is not memorable. The mournful, delicate melody does not match the show's mood. The second opening theme, Jiyuu no Tsubasa,Jiyuu no Tsubasa, by Linked Horizon, also by Linked Horizon, is a disjointed mess. Viewers barely recognize it as a song.Great Escape Cinema Staff’s second ending theme, Great Escape, is fine, but it is forgettable.

A good anime theme song stays with you after you stop caring about the anime. Only one of these four songs is remotely memorable; that is a problem.
