Backpacking comes with risks, including the very real possibility of disappearing. Some missing backpackers never get to tell their stories, despite the many creepy experiences they've had. Backpackers have vanished in urban centers, national parks, and even their own hostels - nowhere is safe. These disappearances are mysterious, with few cases ending in closure. Most backpackers who disappeared did so without explanation, and even when bodies are found, they're often hundreds of miles from where they vanished.

In 1989, a 20-year-old backpacker named Charles HorvathHorvath began a months-long, cross-country hitchhiking trip in Canada. He reached British Columbia and stayed at a campground in Kelowna before vanishing.
Horvath contacted his mother, Denise Allan, stating he would meet her in Hong Kong for his 21st birthday. When Allan did not hear from him after some time, she worried, especially since Horvath kept in touch until then. Allan traveled to British Columbia to search. At the campground, she found he left his tent and all his belongings.
Allan posted missing persons flyers about her son. She returned to her hotel room and found a note. The note read, "I seen him May 26. We were partying and two people knocked him out. But he died. His body is in a lake by the bridge." Divers searched the lake but found no body. After Denise contacted the police again, she told them they searched the wrong side of the bridge, so they searched again. A body surfaced, but it was a local resident who committed suicide. Horvath's body remained missing, but a witness said he attended an all-night party before he disappeared.

Twenty-three-year-old Aubrey Sacco did not return home after her solo, week-long trek in Nepal.Langtang National ParkBackpacking across Asia in 2010, Sacco maintained contact with her parents. After days of silence, Sacco's mother notified the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu. The embassy stated civil unrest in Nepal might have delayed their daughter. Three more days passed without word from Sacco. Then, her father and brother flew from Colorado to Kathmandu to join the search. Between May and July 2014, over 200 people searched the Himalayan Mountains near the Tibetan border. They searched the main trail, both river banks, small paths, and hidden monasteries in the hills, but they never found her.
Scott MacLennan led medical trips in Langtang for ten years. He joined Sacco's father's search. MacLennan believed abusive army soldiers acting as park rangers caused Sacco's death. In July 2010, three French women reported soldiers at a check post near Sacco's vanishing place sexually assaulted them. This is a strong possibility, but it remains just one theory.
Some locals suggest Sacco drowned crossing the river in Kathmandu's difficult terrain. Others claim they saw Sacco board a helicopter in Langtang Village. Some think a hunter killed her; others say her disappearance was a sacrifice. Some believe witches worshipping the Hindu goddess of death, Kali, killed Sacco. Sacco remains unfound, regardless of what happened.

Caroline Clarke and Joanne Walters were only 22 years old.The women vanished in April 1992 after leaving a backpackers' hotel in Sydney, Australia. Both women took short-term jobs to fund their backpacking. They managed to keep in touch with their families in Britain.
Before Walters and Clarke disappeared, Walters told family she planned to travel to Darwin, Northern Territory, and China before returning home. Clarke wrote to a friend detailing plans to travel to Western and Central Australia. The women disappeared later. Australian immigration records show neither left the country. Their bank accounts and phones showed no use since that day.
Two months passed. Both families failed to hear from the girls. Police launched a nationwide search. They set up a hotline. Calls swamped it. People claimed the girls cooked in Mount Isa or were seen in Alice Springs and Yulara in the Northern Territory. September brought the bodies of Clarke and Walters in the Belanglo State Forest. Walters carried fourteen stab wounds. Clarke had ten gunshot wounds. Police think Ivan Milat used her for target practice. Milat was convicted in 1996. He is thought responsible for seven disappearances.

Five months later, hikers found her.The body was partially buried., decomposing body in an isolated mountain area in North Carolina—over 600 miles from Philly.
Police could not determine how Judy Smith died; they thought it was murder. They ruled out robbery since Smith still had her wedding ring and $167 cash. A blue backpack was found at the scene, even though Smith carried a red one. Evidence suggested Judy traveled there on her own. Witnesses put her in Asheville and said she was in a good mood. She told witnesses her husband was a lawyer, but a friend said Judy's marriage was hard and she wanted to leave temporarily. Her adult children from another marriage thought Judy loved Jeffrey and would not leave on purpose. No one figured out why a woman with family would vanish alone or how she ended up dead on a mountain hundreds of miles away.
