He started working as a ski lift operator. He got a massive case of bubble guts at the top lift. He did not want to call down right away. He took the trash can outside and soiled himself in it. A negative 20-degree day made the fear of something sensitive getting stuck clear. The lift operator next to him saw the whole messy thing. She said nothing to him or anyone until the season ended, saying she was impressed by his nerve.

He used to work for a frozen pizza company. On the first day, he finished up with the boss.

The fire alarm sounded. Two engines started. The office and the bank downstairs stood out on the street.

He left his afternoon 'snack' under the grill.

    It caught fire.

His first job was as an assistant janitor at a YMCA. On his first day, he had to unclog a toilet overflowing with diarrhea and clean the mess.

    Janitors get paid too little.

My stupid fault. The day before my first shift, I went to a baseball game with friends. I screamed for the home team all afternoon. The next day turned into Pepe Lopez madness. I woke up on a friend's couch, still drunk, an hour late. I didn't stop. I raced to the job, un-showered and silent. The manager tried to help, but I proved useless. Serving a customer, I sprinted to the bathroom to vomit. The manager told me to return my apron and go home.

Eager-beaver showed up on the first day at 8:58 AM. He took the elevator to the penthouse suite. He timed himself to arrive at exactly 9 AM, as planned.

He stepped out of the elevator into the office foyer. He saw the receptionist was not at her desk. He thought, at least he arrived on time. He walked to the door leading out of the small lobby. He touched the handle to open it and jumped as three different alarms began sounding at the highest pitches known to mankind.

He was stuck in the lobby with only two exits: the locked (and armed) door and the elevators down. But the alarms started, and the elevators locked themselves too.

The receptionist's desk phone rang. I had nothing to lose, so I picked up. It was the security company.

"Can you give the pass-code?" "Umm... I'm a new employee actually, I don't know it." "Don't move!" They acted like I had nowhere to go.

Within ninety seconds of wailing alarms, the elevator doors opened. Four cops stood there, weapons drawn, pointing at me. The manager arrived later, backed up my claim as the new employee, and the cops left.

I never showed up on time for work again.

I started on a Friday afternoon, scheduled to begin the following Monday. Production floor staff start about two hours before office staff. I arrived Monday and explained my situation to the production manager. He had no idea what I meant. No one informed them they were hiring an office worker or that he might have extra help for a couple of weeks. When he tried calling people, no one answered.

The guy seemed annoyed by the whole mess, and I don't blame him. The situation was not welcoming. Now, I see it was a big warning about the communication problems at this place.

I lied to get a line cook job at a busy restaurant. I was out of my depth, and the head chef needed help for a big event soon. I knew nothing about cooking or the terms. When he asked me to hand something like a rubber duck, I just stared at him (it was a spatula). I got burned twice and cut once, but I kept going. The kitchen hit over 110 degrees with constant chaos. He saw I was clueless, but I tried hard. I thought I'd get fired after the big event... I never got fired. I remain friends with the chef. Awful first day, but it ended okay.

I began as a medic in the Detroit area.

We were doing CPR on a cardiac patient. The patient vomited into the intubated airway and landed on my chin right by my mouth during CPR.

At sixteen, I started working at Sainsburys, a UK supermarket. On my first day in this order, I managed:

Leave the freezer door open in the warehouse and ruin tons of stock.

Spill custard on a baby after dropping it when a woman asked me to get it down for her.

I received a disciplinary action on my first day because of this.

I accidentally left an hour before my shift was supposed to end.

I worked there for three years somehow.

    9/11.

This was my first real job after college. I just moved to Chicago. I was getting to work and starting my day. Planes hit the towers. People gathered around a TV in a random guy's cubicle. Then they sent us home. I stayed there for about ninety minutes.

The train home was packed. Everyone was leaving downtown. I went home wondering if I had to return the next day.

My first day at a clothing retailer happened on Dollar Flip Flop Day. They hired many new staff for this event. They gave us small store sections. No training happened before. All I did all shift was fold t-shirts and apologize to hundreds for not answering questions. No manager walked by to check on me. It was a disaster. Later, they offered me only one shift a week. I quit.

I accidentally soiled myself next to my boss. Things felt awkward after we left the stalls.

We still laugh about it sometimes.
