In March 1988, Tim Burton unleashed Beetlejuice - or 'Betelgeuse,' as it's spelled on his headstone - on the world. Michael Keaton's portrayal of the poltergeist made him one of Tim Burton's most beloved characters. Beetlejuice's initial success sparked a frenzy to create a sequel, but it never materialized. For decades, the sequel remained in limbo, much like Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin). The project saw numerous writers come and go, while key cast members like Winona Ryder, who played Lydia, consistently expressed interest in reprising their roles. The sequel took many twists and turns, including the bizarre Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian.

This sequel version has the Deetzes planning a resort, but they do not know they are building on an ancient burial ground. Unsure how to handle the upset ghosts and ghouls they disturbed, the family asks Beetlejuice to save them.
Burton liked the idea. He wanted to pair his gothic expressionist stories with the energy of a Hawaiian paradise.
