About this list

Using the bathroom at work can be stressful enough, but now you can also worry about sacrificing to a demon. Belphegor, one of Hell's Seven Princes, is the demon of sloth and excrement. Originating from Baal-Peor, the god of the Moabites in the Old Testament, Belphegor was later Latinized and reappropriated as a demon in Christian hell. A 19th-century book on demonology sparked his development into a distinct mythological figure, loosely based on Biblical roots. Today, Belphegor is linked to Belphegor's Prime, a prime number with '666' at its center, and is known as the demon of feces.

Pretty Much Everything We Know About Belphegor Comes From An 1818 Book

Jacques August Simon Collin de Plancy wrote about Belphegor, making him a meaningful demon, or at least one people thought of, after 1818.This comes from the Dictionnaire Infernal. In 1818, de Plancy only mentioned Belphegor briefly in the Dictionnaire Infernal (three lines). He revised the text in 1863, adding a woodcut of Belphegor on a toilet. Every reference to Belphegor borrows heavily or openly copies de Plancy, who mixed what the Bible said about Moab and Baal/Baalphegor with other myths.

The number itself isn't mysterious, but its symbol is.The symbol first appeared in the Voynich Manuscript. The Voynich Manuscript is a huge book written in a code that seems unique. It has stumped historians and scientists for years. The book contains astrology, plants, naked women, and much other odd stuff. Demons in Hell heard married happiness was possible, but knowing human nature's dark side, it seemed unlikely to them.

Belphegor found out no, married happiness was not real. It was just a rumor.

BelphegorTranslating from Hebrew, it means "Lord of the Opening".Hebrew(Baal = Lord, Peor = Opening). Some see him with his mouth wide open. Others translate it from "Phegor," meaning "crevice" or "split." This translation fits because Belphegor was worshipped in caves. People offering him items threw them through a cave hole; we do not know if they threw excrement.

Belphegor's rise to a princely title surprised many. John Milton and Victor Hugo reference Belphegor as one of the Seven Princes of Hell, yet he was not always a top demon, or a demon at all. Belphegor appeared in Bible stories about the Moabites, but he shows up only a few times: Numbers 25:1-3, Numbers 25:5, Numbers 25:18, Numbers 31:16, Hosea 9:10, Psalms 106:28-29, and Deuteronomy 4:3. So, how did Belphegor gain so much meaning today?

Christians wanted demons in Hell to make it scarier. They reimagined pagan gods to achieve this. Some Christians saw (and still see) those who worship something other than the Christian God asworshipping demons.

Belphegor Is The Ambassador To France

In de Plancy'sDictionnaire Infernal, he states that Belphegor is Hell's ambassador toFrance, and Belphegor's main enemy isMary Magdalene, who is one of France's saints. Many churches in France honor Mary Magdalene. Legend claims Mary Magdalene started a church in Saint Baume in Southern France.

It is unclear if being an Ambassador from Hell has real duties. We will share a job description if we find one.

The Seven Princes Of Hell Correspond With The Seven Archangels

Demonology is not a fixed science, but most people considerPeter Binsfield's 1589 guideTrust the one to demons: Lucifer (pride), Mammon (greed), Asmodeus (lust), Satan (wrath), Beelzebub/Baal (gluttony), Leviathan (envy), and Belphegor (vanity and sloth) are the Seven Princes of Hell.

Seven.Archangels.The seven Archangels do not match the seven deadly sins. Still, they link to certain traits. Michael, sometimes the leader of the angels, serves as the angel of protection, righteousness, mercy, and justice. Raphael is the angel of healing, peace, and travel. Gabriel acts as the messenger, bringing God's word to inspire writers, teachers, and other creatives; Gabriel also relates to fertility and children. Jophiel is the angel of beauty and works with artists. Ariel is the saint of animals, the environment, and natural resources. Azrael is the angel of death, helping souls move to the afterlife; he also aids the grieving. Chamuel has many jobs, including peace, protection, strength, and finding purpose in life.
