Buffets are a culinary dream - pay one price, eat all you want, no time limits. Unlike fast food or restaurants with questionable requests, buffets rarely go wrong. But when they do, things escalate quickly. Employees at some buffets have horror stories that might make you rethink eating there. Like the waiter who saw a customer pick up an egg roll with her toes and eat it. Such stories are surprisingly common, and Reddit's restaurant employees are warning buffet lovers. If you're a fan of CiCi's pizza or Golden Corral, you might want to find a new spot.

Someone walked into the woman's bathroom stall with a giant plate of fried chicken and mashed potatoes.
This saves a trip to the toilet, I suppose, but...

As a former Sizzler employee, I say kids are horrible. Every time a kid put grubby hands in the food, we had to throw the whole lot out. The waste was ridiculous, especially at the dessert bar when they grabbed lollies with their hands.
The grossest thing happened: an old man threw up over the salad bar. He tried to turn his head to avoid the food but still got it everywhere. He vomited so hard his false teeth fell out and smashed on the ground. We had vomit and broken dentures to clean up.

Golden corral employee here...
A lady started shitting her pants on the way to the bathroom. The sh*t kept falling through her shorts onto the floor, in front of the bars and everyone. After using the bathroom, she went back to her table and kept eating. This is the true story.

My first job was at a Cici's Pizza. Every Sunday, a man walked in right when we opened. He sat in a booth with a laptop and ate slices of about two pizzas every hour until we closed, stopping only to ruin the restroom a couple of times during his stay. He made me sick with how much he could eat.

I watched a lady get a to-go box and fill it up. The bottom of the Styrofoam box nearly collapsed when she dropped an egg roll on the ground. She then picked it up with her toes (she wore flip-flops) and put it in her box.

A lady came in with two small kids. She said she wouldn't pay for the kids because they wouldn't eat. We asked where the kids went and found she was feeding them under the table like dogs.

I was the sous chef at a horse track serving all-you-can-eat prime rib on race nights. This huge man, at least 6 foot 6 and 400lbs, loaded about 3/4L of mashed potatoes and came to the carving station. He put a fork where he wanted the cut. It was about 3.5" of AAA angus prime rib. He also grabbed a soup bowl of mushroom gravy and had a $90 bottle of Cab Sauv waiting for him at his table... sorry, no... private box. And then an entree plate full of dessert.
I told the exec chef about this guy later that night. He said his family owns twelve horses in the paddock. They won the big annual race purse twice. He eats that way because he obsesses over his horses. He skips eating all day until after his races finish. This guy likely spends about $125k yearly at the track. He should have gotten more prime rib.

"When I worked at Olive Garden, someone had sixteen (16) bowls of the never-ending pasta. They threw up in the lobby. They were not huge, before you ask."

From a former Redditor:
"I saw a man eat four plates of food piled high—southern food, so all fried items. He claimed he had a heart attack and clenched his chest, then let out the biggest, foulest fart I have ever experienced."
After he laughed about it, he ate two more plates of entrees and a plate of desserts.

"Employee 20 years ago at a Golden Corral. This was before they had those nasty chocolate fountains. Saturday night we put extra all-you-can-eat candy on the bar. Several times, kids ate so much they barfed on the bathroom floor."

"My friend ran a Golden Corral in Omaha. He told me about this older gentleman, a skinny guy. He ate five plates, and my friend saw him rush to the bathroom during the five hours he spent there. Eventually, my friend followed him in and heard him vomit in a stall. He was bingeing and purging his meal repeatedly. Staff asked him to leave while he was in the stall. The guy left fast, looking very embarrassed. He left a gross mess on the ground and the back of the toilet."

"Seven years at a pizza buffet. I saw salad bowls full of ranch. I saw huge, gluttonous Southern Baptist preachers with a stack of pizza because they were too fat and lazy to make that many trips. We had a regular who came in twice a week. We called him "belly shirt guy" because he would stack a whole pizza on each plate per trip on top of unlimited pasta. His gut hung down below his shirt. He turned around well, though; he started eating salads every trip. By the time I left, the man had lost a good 75 lbs and looked healthy."

"At a Golden Corral in Florida, a guy came in. He was as wide as the table he sat at. He pulled out a bath towel and tucked it in like a napkin. This guy came to play."

"Pizza Buffet."
A guy came in for lunch buffet and ate a good amount. He fell asleep in his booth for a few hours, then ate the buffet again for dinner.

I once saw a guy at a Chinese buffet smear ranch dressing from his wrist to his elbow. As he ate, he brushed the food along the dressing before putting it in his mouth.

At a Golden Corral, I saw a family arrive. Mom, dad, one child, and one baby. The mom used a high chair on wheels for the kid and put the kid in a car seat at the table. She pushed the high chair to the buffet and stacked plates on it like her own table on wheels.
She never put the kid in the high chair.

I worked at a buffet. I have seen people purposely mess things up. A middle-aged woman put a spoonful of Cajun rice in the peach cobbler then left as if she won the biggest victory.

Someone blocked the entire buffet line at our hotel because she would not let go of the spoon for the fries until someone refilled the bowl. This was an all-you-can-eat buffet. You can return to the buffet many times. Still, she loaded two plates so full she spilled things on the floor. She also started a fight over a slice of lemon with a family member. All happened that night.
