The Chicago Ripper Crew's brutal murders stunned Chicago, IL, in 1981 and 1982. Robin Gecht, Edward Spreitzer, and brothers Andrew and Thomas Kokoraleis were the suspects behind the kidnapping, assault, and torture of 18 women. Claiming to be part of a satanic cult, they subjected the women to dark rituals. This case was part of the larger Satanic Panic of the 1980s, which swept America with fear of the occult. Although most scares proved false, the Ripper Crew was horrifyingly real. Today, two of the men are serving life sentences, one without parole and one unlikely to live to see his parole date. The third was the last person executed in Illinois before the state ended capital punishment, and the fourth is eligible for release.

The Ripper Crew made their victims die agonizing deaths. After putting a young woman in their van, the four men beat, stabbed, and sexually assaulted her until she gave in. The attacks lasted hours; the women lived through most of it.
The Ripper Crew usually removed the breasts with a wire garrote before the women died. The men then disposed of the bodies, saving the breasts for the last part of their ritual: the cannibalistic communion.

Authorities think the Chicago Ripper Crew took 18 to 20 women from Chicago streets. They focused on sex workers, but not every victim fit that description. Men pulled victims into their red van fast on busy daytime streets.
The crew took anyone they found who was alone and looked vulnerable. Age did not matter. One source claims ringleader Robin Gecht needed the victim to have large breasts.

The Satanic Panic of the 1980s was the closest thing to awitch hunt. The 20th century saw this. Communities across the United States felt anxiety about "stranger danger" since the 1960s and '70s.
The 1980s brought big shifts in America. Many people felt traditional family life and religious beliefs faced attack. This feeling fueled the Satanic Panic. Americans, already on edge, easily accepted stories about demon clowns, satanic babysitters, and suburban families practicing occult things.
Most these stories lacked proof. Authorities found therapists coached children in daycare trials to give shocking, horrifying accounts of events that never happened. Still, amidst the false alarms and media exaggerations, the Chicago Ripper Crew showed some truth in the Satanic Panic.

Carole Pappas, the wife of a former Chicago Cubs pitcher...A former Chicago Cubs pitcher was a suspected victim.Milt Pappas vanished on September 11, 1982. She lay submerged in her car; her body showed...The body showed no signs of violence or trauma. The four men, already in the justice system by 1987, were no longer suspects because she did not fit the Ripper Crew's usual method.
