About this list

So-called 'gay conversion therapy' has long been controversial. A 2015 speech by President Obama calling for its ban brought attention to this dehumanizing, dangerous, and ineffective process. Since the late 1800s, medical and psychological attempts to 'cure' homosexuality have been made, including aversion therapy and surgery. Evangelical Protestants and Baptists have also embraced this approach, often sending children to unlicensed Christian therapists. However, these techniques have never been proven to work. Many teens coerced into undergoing them have struggled with depression and self-harm. Some gay conversion proponents have been caught up in gay scandals, and more states are banning the practice for children. This article highlights some of the worst abuses of the gay conversion movement, including quack psychiatry, beatings, and hypocrisy.
