Scariest Noise People Heard

About this list

Creepy sounds are magnified when heard alone, in darkness, or after reading a Stephen King novel. They fall into categories: shrieking wild animals like mountain lions, warning sirens like air raid horns, natural disasters like hurricanes, creaky house parts like doors and gates, humans in pain like bones breaking, screams especially from unseen sources, and malfunctioning household electronics like TVs with static. Sometimes silence is the scariest sound. On Reddit, people share their most haunting experiences, with many sounds fitting into these categories. But the creepiest ones are often unexplainable. A baby's cry is distressing, but eerie when no infant is present. A musical note can sound pure, yet dark when played in an empty room. Even Alexa can be scary when she initiates conversations on her own.

    From Redditor /u/djl240:

This was not just a sound; it was a bad feeling.

I was fifteen on a beautiful summer night. Suddenly, without warning, I heard an intense low-frequency tone and a physical vibration. Seconds later, my stepdad, two brothers, and I hit the floor, hands clamped over our ears, writhing in pain.

This sound felt like it pierced my spirit. Only this way I can describe it—it was horrifying. It felt malevolent. After about ten seconds, it stopped. My stepdad was more scared than I had ever seen him. He was a calloused veteran; nothing shook him. I sought answers, but he forbade us from talking about it.

I still do not know. I think about it often. This happened in a very rural area of Pennsylvania.

    From Redditor /u/BunHolly:

I grew up in a house we believed was haunted by the elderly couple who lived there before us. It never bothered me; I felt no threat for nearly fourteen years. Then, one night about a year ago, I went upstairs around 2 a.m. I heard someone clear their throat behind me and got startled. This threw me off balance. I tripped in the hall, fell face-first, and saw someone laughing at me.

The only thing is, when I turned to yell at them for laughing, no one was there. I could hear my family snoring. The next morning, when I asked who did it, my family claimed they had no idea what I meant. I cannot get that laugh out of my head.

    From Redditor /u/Edymnion:

I live out in the woods.

One night, while falling asleep, I heard a super breathy roar coming straight from the other side of my bedroom wall (in the backyard). It came from the top of the wall. I know what a bear sounds like; this was not a bear. It had to be at least nine feet tall to make that sound come from where it was.

I know I was not dreaming when I woke up because the cat ran out of the room and would not return for almost an hour.

I joke it was Bigfoot, but I honestly have no idea what it was.

I woke up at 3 a.m. to strange noises while living downtown. I went outside and saw they came from the sky. It sounded like the aliens from "War of the Worlds". I grabbed my cat, went to my room, and locked the door while they went on... I was terrified. I had never heard anything that loud or sinister.War of the Worlds. I looked it up the next day and found others heard the same sounds globally. I think this was 2012? I heard it in Calgary, Alberta.

I was outside my house and heard a man scream. The experience felt unreal; I am still not 100% sure it occurred. It felt like the mix of what you expect from the most miserable, desperate man and someone feeling the worst imaginable pain.

The scream happened in broad daylight, so it was not like a random sound in Silent Hill games.Silent HillIt felt so unexpected and strange. I never learned anything else about it, nor did I hear it again.

I sometimes pull all-nighters. Each time, I hear a strange rattling noise at 4:24 am. I really want to find its source.

It is creepy how it happens at that exact time.

Someone called me randomly one day. They screamed, "AHHH! HELP ME! PLEASE! HELP!" then the phone stopped working.

I have no idea who this person is or why they had my number. I gave the police the information I had, but I never got word back about what happened.

I honestly hope it was a prank.

    From Redditor /u/Huuballawick:

This was the first and only time I tried urban exploration. Friends did it often. I did not really care, but they convinced me.

They built a new hospital near us because the old one was old. It was blocked off but not locked. You could climb over fences and explore. We went inside. Nothing creepy happened. No sudden sounds, no doors closing, or any creepy feeling.

As we moved toward two metal double doors at the end of a hall, I heard someone whisper in my ear, "I wouldn't do that." I turned. No one was there, so I told my friends calmly, "You said this would be interesting, but it is boring. Not creepy at all. Let's go do something fun."

I knew acting scared would only make them investigate more. So, they thought I failed to impress them and they gave up. We left right away and never returned.

Update: Some people suggested I go back and check, but that is not possible now (the building is gone). I decided to call a friend whose mom worked as an EKG tech in that hospital. I told her the exact path we took and asked her mom what was originally inside the double doors.

She guessed the morgue was likely the location because of the doors. She knew the room maintained a specific temperature to slow decomposition. The doors were built to keep the cold in. She thought they would have been too heavy to push open without power.

A few days ago, my friends and I were in a wooded area of an old, abandoned mental asylum. It was foggy and dark. We heard church bells chiming in the distance.

While we sat by the fire and talked, we suddenly heard a huge roar, like a freight train pulling wagons. There was no freight train nearby. The sound repeated for a while.

It sounded like something from the War of the Worlds film.War of the WorldsIt sounded so creepy.

I am an atheist; I do not believe in voodoo or religion. But as a child, something touched my shoulder and told me I was evil.

After that, my life declined. I got injured, and my father became a drug addict, and my mother became an alcoholic.

As a child, I cleaned the house alone. I played music at the loudest setting (red light showed "max"). The music slowly lowered. I went to the music player's room, and the red light showed "min.".

You had to manually adjust the music up and down.

A shortwave radio station in the middle of Russia emits a creepy buzz every few seconds for 24 hours a day since 1973.

Every couple of years, it sends out coordinates or a man gives a Russian code, then it buzzes again for thousands of years.

I recall being about 13 years old, in a deep sleep. Suddenly, I heard a deep voice say, "WHAT." I felt myself exit a tunnel from my sleep (or somewhere else). I woke up around 5 am. Only my brother, who was 11 and had a light voice, was in the room with me.

That voice shook me. It sounded so clear, like it was in my mind and right next to me.

    From a former Redditor:

I drove my semi down the road, listening to an audiobook, and heard a hiss. It took me a few seconds to realize someone was speaking in a hissing voice. It scared me because I thought it was an air leak in my truck that could damage the brakes, but I was just very confused.

The truck's air conditioning failed all day. It suddenly turned on at full power. Imagine hearing Parseltongue fromHarry Potter.A massive blast of cold air hit you at the same time. The hissing voice stopped after one or two minutes. It repeated every five to twenty minutes. I took nearly an hour and a half before I thought it came from the speakers.

I don't know how this occurred or why. My phone's notification sound changed to something.Harry Potter. The ringtone was Parseltongue. I cannot find any Parseltongue ringtones on my phone. I have not heard it again, but I believe this is what happened.

I still do not know how this happened. As a kid, a CD player growled when I asked it to go to my imaginary tea party. That was the loudest growl I ever heard. It sounded sinister.

I had my dad check it, but he found nothing wrong. The noise never happened again. Still, it scared me badly when it occurred. CD players clearly dislike tea parties.

    From Redditor /u/oceanmoon_:

In second grade, my teacher read a book while we sat on the floor. I heard a voice from the hallway. It had a deep, echoing sound saying, "Oceanmooooon..." I was not scared then; I was just shocked. I said nothing and kept listening to my teacher.

It sounds like something from a horror movie, but it really happened. I do not believe in the paranormal. I cannot explain it. I do not have schizophrenia, and I have never heard anything like this.
