About this list

In November 2016, Kala Brown was found chained in a storage container on Todd Kohlhepp's 100-acre property outside Spartanburg, SC. Kohlhepp, a local real estate agent, owned the land and container. After her discovery, Brown revealed that Kohlhepp had shot her boyfriend in the chest. Following his arrest, Kohlhepp confessed to this murder and several others. The docuseries Devil Unchained explores Todd Kohlhepp's life of crime, including his actions against Kala Brown. In the documentary, Kohlhepp freely discusses his crimes, but his narrative is highly unreliable, making his story as twisted as any true crime tale. Todd Kohlhepp's crimes raise questions: who is he, how many murders did he commit, and was he behind the Superbike mass murder in South Carolina? Kohlhepp claims responsibility, but some doubt his trustworthiness.

After serving a sexual assault sentence in Arizona, Kohlhepp moved to South Carolina. He first worked at a sports apparel company. Then he got his real estate license. His criminal history made both things seem impossible.

He listed his past job as "graphic designer with emphasis on print media, vinyl graphics and engraving" for "Arizona Consumer Industries." In reality, he worked for Arizona Correctional Industries, making products with inmates.

Kohlhepp lied on his LinkedIn profile. He wrote he got a computer science degree from Central Arizona College. To get his South Carolina real estate license, he claimed the prison sentence was a mistake.

He said he and his ex-girlfriend argued while looking for his dog. He carried a gun only because of Phoenix area gang activity. Since criminal background checks did not exist then, his license application passed.
