Unfamiliar with Mormonism? You might not know that FLDS and LDS are vastly different. The LDS, or Latter-Day Saints, make up most of the world's Mormons. Their conservative views may unsettle some, but they're far removed from the FLDS, or Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints. Fundamentalist Mormons, a small splinter group, practice polygamy. Unlike LDS members, who don't practice polygamy, FLDS members have distinct beliefs. Leadership is another key difference: FLDS leader Warren Jeffs is serving a life sentence for sexually assaulting minors, among other crimes, while LDS leader Thomas Monson has just turned 90. The LDS supports interracial marriage, whereas the FLDS finds it unacceptable, earning them a hate group label from the Southern Poverty Law Center. The LDS church wants to distance itself from the FLDS church, and for good reason - their differences are striking.

Eleven other FLDS men faced similar charges. Despite the serious crimes, many of Jeffs's followers remain devoted to him. While in prison, Jeffs wrote a book calledJesus Christ Message to All Nations,he claims this message includes direct messages from Jesus Christ.

Many assume all Mormons practice polygamy, but this is not true. The FLDS uses placement marriage.Polygamy was once a mainstream Mormon practice. Threats from the U.S. government made most Mormons stop this practice during the 19th century. This change took time; it was not instant, and it did not affect everyone.
In 1904, Mormon officials told local groups to sign a pledge promising they would not have more than one wife. Some groups refused and were kicked out of the Mormon church. One group formed the FLDS, which still practices polygamy today.

The LDS do not typically arrange marriages. The FLDS uses arranged marriage within its church. This practice started in the 1940s. The Priesthood Council decides marriages. Because following the Priesthood Council is needed for salvation, these arrangements usually pass. These marriages can link teenage girls with older men they never met or men who are already married.
Some claim families marry within the FLDS, but these claims lack proof. FLDS leadership can also force a married couple to divorce.
The LDS church does not typicallyarrangemarriages. Members choose their spouses but must attend supervised group dates, have relationships within the faith, and wait for sex until after marriage.

Because one person runs the FLDS, it has strange requirements. These requirements include banning children's toys and corn consumption. One extreme rule from 2012 forbids married couples from having sex. Few religions ban sex completely. To reproduce, how should FLDS members act? Warren Jeffs, the leader, named a council of 15 men. These men are the only ones who can pass on genes. If an FLDS woman wants to get pregnant, she must ask one of those men. After acceptance, two other council members must watch the sexual act.
Meanwhile, the LDS does not act in such a cultish way. Members must remain
chaste until marriage.Sex is allowed within those limits. The LDS church expects its regular members to dress

There is an official dress code for employees. This applies to church employees. The church's dress code recently loosened. Women can now wear pantsuits and dress slacks instead of just skirts and dresses.
FLDS church members have much stricter dress codes. The FLDS has a more restrictive dress code.Women and girls wear "prairie dresses." Many LDS members hold racist beliefs, but racism is not official LDS doctrine. All group positions, including priesthood, allow men regardless of race. This might stem from a long history of racial exclusion.A long history of racial exclusion informs the current board. The current board has few members of color. The current board has only a few members of color. The board has only a few members of color.
The LDS needs to end racial bias. They are improving more than the FLDS, which still uses openly racist policies. The Southern Poverty Law Center added the FLDS to its hate groups list. The Southern Poverty Law Center added the FLDS to its hate groups list. The Southern Poverty Law Center added them due to their stance against interracial marriage. In a 1995 FLDS priesthood class, a teacher said:
"He [Cain] was cursed with black skin and he is the father of the Negro people... He is used by the devil, as a mortal man, to do great evils… If you, young people, were to marry a Negro, you could not be a priesthood person, even if you repented. You could not stay in this work."
The FLDS's overall attitude did not change much after that time.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Southern Poverty Law Center lists the FLDS as a hate group.Warren Jeffs listed the FLDS as a hate group, saying:
"The people grew so evil, the men started to marry the men and the women married the women. This is the worst evil act you can do, next to murder. It is like murder. Whenever people commit that sin, then the Lord destroys them."
Many religious groups condemn homosexuality, but most do not compare it to murder. The LDS chastity law does not.The LDS chastity law states that "sexual relations are proper only between a man and a woman who are legally and lawfully wedded as husband and wife."The LDS chastity law states that "sexual relations are proper only between a man and a woman who are legally and lawfully wedded as husband and wife."
LDS members with same-sex attraction can stay in good standing if they do not act on those desires. This stance is not progressive. It often forces LGBTQ+ members to choose between their identity and their community. That is far from comparing gay marriage to murder.

The FLDS is less restrictive than the LDS, except for the number of wives a man can have.Surprisingly,FLDS members drink coffee and alcohol. The LDS church does not permit tea, coffee, or alcohol. FLDS split from mainstream Mormon faith before those bans on caffeine and alcohol took effect.

Some LDS parents choose to homeschool their children. Some do this for religious reasons. The church does not require this; it views it as a family choice. The FLDS strongly encourages homeschooling focused on faith. This often means members lack proper grounding in history, math, geography, and other basic subjects. The FLDS strongly encourages homeschooling focused on faith. FLDS's Practice Of Interfamilial Breeding Resulted In A Genetic Disorder, Which The LDS Doesn't HaveFLDS policies limit the genetic pool. This results in some children having an autosomal recessive metabolic disorder called fumarase deficiency.Fumarase deficiency is the condition resulting from the FLDS's limited genetic pool. This condition causes encephalopathy, severe intellectual disability, unusual facial features, brain malformation, and epileptic seizures. This condition appeared in 20 FLDS community members; until 1990, it affected only 13 people worldwide. The LDS church avoids this because it does not have a similar inbreeding problem.Fumarase deficiency causes encephalopathy, severe intellectual disability, unusual facial features, brain malformation, and epileptic seizures. The FLDS believes in blood atonement. The LDS church does not.Blood atonement means certain sins require the sinner's blood to be spilled for atonement. Brigham Young, a Mormonism founder, started this idea. Young considered miscegenation, apostasy, theft, murder, fornication, and adultery deserving of blood atonement. Young thought blood atonement should happen willingly, or with "care and compassion" if not.
The LDS church disavows blood atonement. Warren Jeffs, FLDS leader, repeatedly mentioned this doctrine in his sermons. No evidence shows the group practiced blood atonement.

The LDS church is a massive organization with many properties and businesses. Time Magazine reported in 1996 that their assets are worth far more than the FLDS's.The LDS church's assets are worth far more than the FLDS's.LDS church assets reached $30 billion. The LDS church claims these reports exaggerate. At least two-thirds of their assets sit in non-money-making places, like temples and meetinghouses. The rest of their assets generate money. These include holdings in businesses such as AgReserves Inc., Bonneville International, and Deseret News.
The LDS runs schools and universities. Brigham Young University is one example. Funds for these come from business profits and donations or tithes.
Meanwhile, the FLDS is muchsmaller. The United Effort Plan is a major FLDS asset. It owns nearly all homes occupied by FLDS members. In 2005, the Attorney General's court order froze the UEP to redistribute properties to church members. The UEP was worth about $100 million then. This process continues.

Voting is a right for every American citizen. FLDS church members usually do notusethis right. They do this because they learn Warren Jeffs, the current FLDS leader, acts as the President of the United States. Thus, they see no reason to join elections.
