In driver’s ed, each student needed a parent to ride along. My mom came along on my day. She sat in the back seat between two teenagers while I drove.

I was on a one-way street in the far right lane. The teacher said, "Turn left at the light." I started merging left. He said, "Left." I ignored him. He got frantic, shouting, "Left, left, left!" My mom yelled from the back seat, "She IS GOING LEFT, YOU IDIOT!" He just said, "Oh, I meant right." The rest of the day felt awkward.

I got into a road rage fight during my second lesson. I had just turned 16 and was taking driver’s ed with an older man.

After five minutes, a driver in an early-'90s GMC Jimmy passed us over a double solid in a 15-mph zone and cut me off. This forced the instructor to slam the brakes and jerk the wheel. Next, the instructor cursed out the window, hit his horn, and floored the gas. He chased the man down. I sat as a passenger in the driver's seat, watching the Jimmy swerve around, then pulled into the school's backlot.

My instructor told me to keep driving and pull up next to the man. I did. He started hitting the man’s vehicle from outside, and the man stepped out. He was the janitor; he knew me. My instructor exited and began swinging, and the janitor joined in. At 16, I was bigger than most adults. I got out, separated them, and threw extra punches to stop myself from being hit.

In the panic, I forgot to put the car in park. It rolled into the dumpster. Two grown men sat on the ground, banged up, with me standing over them. The principal came out then, and the police arrived. This was my first time in handcuffs. I could only panic because I was one of the "good kids".

Finally, everything stopped. I found a new driving instructor.

I remember a kid from driver’s ed. He made a U-turn three lanes away and sped off with the instructor, me, and another kid in the car as a cop flashed his lights. He did not get his license.

I drove twice at a school. One time, I drove for four hours. The second time was the test. The school has ex-cops. Driving is one-on-one. My parents never took me driving, so all my experience happened during that first four-hour, nerve-wracking drive.

I merged onto the freeway in heavy traffic. A huge pickup blared its horn at me. I swerved back into my lane, clearly shaken. We got off the freeway and pulled over. I cried, shaken. My 60-year-old teacher felt bad. He asked, "Do you need a hug?" I nodded. He hugged me. That simple care was necessary. I still think about it sometimes. My parents lacked that care then, so that comfort felt great.

After the test, the cool younger cop who drove with me took me to an empty parking lot. He did tons of cool drifting.

My instructor was really old. I crashed and totaled the car during driver's ed. He retired the next day.

Some cars have the instructor's brake pedal on the passenger side. My friend had a heavy foot and sped a lot. The instructor got angry. At almost every green light, he slammed the gas, and the instructor fought back.

    I thought it was hilarious.

My instructor made me go through the drive-through at a Wendy's. She ordered, asked if I wanted anything, and when I said no, she said, "Good, ‘cause I only have enough for my food." She also made me stop outside her friend's house so she could run inside quickly. I think I was involved in something illegal there.

The DMV gave me a restricted driver's license at 15. It listed me as 20 by putting the wrong year on my date of birth. The DMV gave me a legal fake ID. I did not use it for alcohol. It got me into clubs to see bands touring the area. Eventually, I moved into the music and concert business.

I went to a driving school in my twenties; I had never driven before. We left the school parking lot. There was some traffic, but it wasn't super busy. The instructor pointed at a sign ahead and told me to turn left. I leaned forward, squinted, and said I wished I had worn my contacts that morning...

Sorry, [instructor], your expression was priceless.

(And yes, I was wearing my contacts.)

During my driving lesson, my instructor fell asleep on the freeway. At the end of the hour, he said, "You drove so well today!" I thought, "I was driving 100 miles per hour."

I had two co-teachers. Both were old and creepy. They did not teach us anything.

A week into the class, Teacher #1 told me, a 15.5-year-old, to get in the driver's seat. He forced me onto the interstate for the first time in the car. I tried to be careful; traffic was light. But he started screaming and grabbed the wheel because I was not speeding up fast enough or something—I never knew what I did wrong. I hated driving that interstate for years after that because he shook me up so much.

Teacher #2 acted laid-back yet creepy. I sat at a stop sign, thinking about how I would chew out the classmate behind me for messing with my hair. Then, I looked sideways. The instructor in the passenger seat twisted my hair around his finger near my shoulder. Ewwwwww.

The instructor believed I was in football. He needed my height and weight. I gave them to him. He said, "Bullsh*t. What position do you play?" I said I don't play sports. He mumbled and wrote something down. He got in the car and said he would talk to the football coach about putting me on weights. I reminded him I am not in football, but he ignored me. We drove for a while, and he asked how I thought the team would do this season.

I finally said f*ck it and told him there is a lot of talent this season. That coach has really worked on our defense this year.

I got my first ticket during a driving lesson. My instructor had to pay it because he was the "responsible" driver. He got angry and started yelling at the police officer. I enjoyed the whole show (my instructor was a d*ck), and he ended up paying double the fine.

My instructor told me stories about his job while I drove. He told me about one time he was hungover and very tired. He put on sunglasses and rested his head on his arm. He nodded off. The driver did not see this because of the sunglasses. So he just drove down the main road, passing several villages. I guess he thought the instructor would stop him if there was a problem, so he must have been doing great.

My instructor loved fishing. So, a couple of our rides went to his friends' places to get equipment or buckets of fish bait. He was a nice guy, though, and I liked driving with him.

I was 15 when I took driver's ed at high school. The instructor looked like a thinner version of Dr. Phil, but with glasses and a thick Chicago accent. One day, he took us for practice driving. He made us stop by the dry cleaners to pick something up. I asked others who had him before. Apparently, it was common for him to use students to run errands, which I found funny.
