We used regular food dye this year for egg color. Add 10 drops of food coloring, a splash of vinegar, and hot water. You can use crayons for designs, but that is more than I wanted to do.

I searched online. I could not find my method for making them. I do not recall where I learned my technique, but it was better than 20 years ago.

Save up big rubber bands, like those from the newspaper, or buy some.

Take a section of Saran Wrap and crumple it after your eggs are boiled and dried.

Wrap the egg with the crumpled plastic and lightly secure it with a rubber band.

Put the egg inside the dye.

This process gets messy; your hands will get dyed unless you wear rubber gloves. The dye moves around the wrap, leaving a fantastic marbled pattern on the egg.

Remove the egg and wrap from the cup. Gently squeeze the extra dye back into the cup.

These look best when they are a single color against the white egg background.

    Enjoy!

Use vinegar and food dye in a mug. You can also make wire spoon shapes to dip the egg in.

This is a traditional method in Poland, where I live, and many other places too.

Boil onion skins for 20 to 30 minutes. Then, add the eggs and a dash of vinegar to boil them for a few minutes, just as you normally would. The color transfers well. These are normal boiled eggs, just decorated.

In my country, we usually dye eggs with natural things like tea and herbs. We wrap the eggs with string after putting the ingredients on. Boil the eggs in onion skin water for cool results. You can swap the leaves for herbs or rice.

My grandma boiled them with red onions and vinegar. They always turned that burnt red color, which I now find nostalgic.

Stickers and tape work well. You can dye an egg, cover parts with stickers or tape, and then dye it again. Use a wax crayon for writing or drawing. If you paint well, use food coloring to paint your eggs. For darker colors, put food coloring on a paper towel and brush it onto the egg.

Paint pens and magic markers work well. If the contest permits, add 3D to your egg using Royal Icing.

If you build a display based on a theme, pick one that both kids and adults will like. Whimsy always beats serious.

If I made a theme display, I would do a wacky chess set or many egg-shaped workers coloring and dyeing people-shaped figures.

For a natural method, find beeswax. Melt it down. Use a toothpick to draw designs on the egg. Then, use onion skin. The wax areas won't dye much, but they will leave a pattern.

    Use turmeric (yellow).

Use onion skins and chili powder (orange).

    Use spinach (pale green).

    Use beets (maroon).

    Use red cabbage (blue).

I mixed the red and blue hoping for purple. It turned more brownish.

Put the ingredient and a cup of water on the stove. Bring it to a boil, then lower it to a simmer for thirty minutes. Strain it into a jar. Let it cool to room temperature. Pour in two tablespoons of white vinegar. Then, place the hardboiled eggs in and let them sit in the fridge overnight.
