Joshua Barkman, creator of False Knees, began making comics in 2011. He contributed art to a student newspaper run by a friend. Unlike some animal comics creators, Barkman didn't always draw super-realistic animals. Initially, humans were his main subjects. In a 2017 interview, he said: Animals are way more fun to draw than me! This allows me to play on people's expectations of common North American city animals. We coexist with these creatures, often forgetting they're there or viewing them as pests. I like giving them a voice - even if it's through the perspective of a 20-something, white, human man. Today, False Knees is recognized worldwide, beyond Barkman's native Canada. His ironic webcomics might just make you think animals are more introspective than humans.
