About this list

Stitches are familiar to us as a way to close injuries, but consider them up close - doctors sew you back together like Sally, Jack's girlfriend in The Nightmare Before Christmas, a rag doll reassembled with needle, thread, and a few stitches. The stories leading to those situations are even wilder. Our readers share their first-time stitches experiences and how they got there. Check out their stories and vote for the most interesting ones! Comments have been edited for length and clarity.

I thought I could jump out the window like Superman. As a kid, I hit the big wooden sill. I shattered the roof of my mouth. I spent months with my mouth wired shut.

    Grabbing A Broken Bottle

    From a Facebook commenterCarol A:

At seven, I grabbed a broken bottle by the neck. I nearly lost my right middle finger. The doctor reattached most of it. I have a crooked, funky scar. I think this made me ambidextrous, but I mostly use my right hand.

Kicking Something Barefoot In A Dark Basement

    From a Facebook commenterShawn B:

[I] kicked something in the basement barefoot. I put a big hole in my foot. I did not know I was hurt until I reached the top of the stairs and saw the blood. My Mom worked at a hospital, so we got there fast and got me stitched up. The worst part was the shots to numb the injury before they stitched it. I still do not know what I kicked.

Halloween in the '80s. A frameless mirror sliced my hand. As a prankster, I took time to convince people I needed the hospital. I panicked seeing the needles and broke the doctor's nose.

Around four, we ice skated on the concrete patio. I fell and cracked my chin. A friend's dentist brought me to his house. He stitched my chin. I don't have much of a scar, so I think he did well.

    It Left A J-Shaped Scar

    From a Facebook commenterEllen L:

Mid-1970s. An unsupervised house had many related children. A fight started, and I slammed the front door in my cousin's face! I slammed it hard. My hand went through the glass, and a large shard dangled from my hand. I waited for my dad to come home and take me to the hospital for stitches. I still have a 'J' shaped scar under my right index finger.
