What If Earth Was Flat?

About this list

Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, but he wasn't trying to prove the world was round. Virtually nobody thought Earth was flat, as ancient Greeks like Eratosthenes had calculated the planet's spherical shape in the 3rd century BCE. Despite this long-standing knowledge, some people, including famous flat-Earthers, still believe Earth is flat. They reject mathematical calculations, astronomical observations, and geological processes that support a spherical planet, seeing them as part of a grand conspiracy involving every government. The idea of a conspiracy to hide the planet's shape may seem puzzling, but it's worth exploring. This leads to a natural question: what would be the physical implications if the Earth were actually flat?

Nothing Would Stop The Sun From Crashing Into Earth

Flat Earth theory claims Earth lacks gravity; instead, it accelerates upward.Earth accelerates upward. This upward motion equals the rate scientists claim gravity pulls, creating the feeling of gravity. The sun and moon float and orbit above the Earth's surface with this constant upward motion.

These theories create a problem. If this is true, there is no force keeping the sun and moon from crashing into Earth. There is no force keeping the sun from crashing into Earth. There is no force keeping the sun and moon orbiting Earth. These theories assume no gravity, but gravity allows orbits and stops the sun, moon, and Earth from colliding.

Orbiting works like any other motion.Centripetal force pushes the orbiting object perpendicular to the center while pulling it toward that center. This combination makes it circle, establishing a steady orbit. This force also stops Earth from falling into the sun due to its gravity. The orbiting object experiences a push perpendicular to the center and a pull toward it. This combination causes it to circle, setting a constant orbit. This combination also stops Earth from falling into the sun because of its massive gravitational pull.

Without gravity, no force makes the moon and sun revolve in a circle. If there is no gravity or orbit, and Earth accelerates upward, the sun will crash into Earth.

Earth Would Have No Magnetic Field

Earth's core is important. The 5,700°C (~10,000°F) ball of melted magma sits at the planet's center, beneath the cooler liquid mantle made of metals like iron.

According to the...The dynamo theory explains how Earth generates its magnetic field. The Dynamo theory states convection currents and Earth's rotation move the liquid iron across great distances under the crust. This creates an electrical current and a magnetic field. Iron moves through the magnetic fields, making more electrical currents in a never-ending loop.

This magnetic field covers the whole globe. Though it changes, it stays constant enough to...The magnetic field shields Earth's atmosphere from high radiation from the sun, solar wind, and cosmic rays. This shield keeps the atmosphere in place, letting life exist on Earth. The magnetic field acts as a shield, blocking high radiation from the sun, solar wind, and cosmic rays. It keeps Earth's atmosphere stable, allowing life to thrive.

A flat Earth lacks a core (or has a center acting differently). Thus, there is no current under the crust to make a magnetic field. The atmosphere would disappear, and life would fail.

There Would Be No Tectonic Movement Or Seismic Activity

The hot liquid mantle and the hotter solid core are under Earth's surface. The heat difference between these layers causes a convection current in the mantle. The heat difference between the mantle and the core causes a convection current in the mantle.Hotter materials rise near Earth's crust. They cool and sink toward the core. This process moves liquid rock and magma below the surface, slowly shifting the tectonic plates above. When plates push, separate, or slide, they cause seismic activity, which we see as earthquakes and volcanoes.

A flat Earth lacks a core or a center operating differently than a sphere's core. Therefore, tectonic movement and seismic activity do not exist. This might seem good because earthquakes and volcanoes hurt humans badly, but lacking these natural processes brings bigger problems.

Volcanoes immediately harm things. However, they offer a long-term gain: they supply gases needed to make and sustain a stable atmosphere.Volcanoes supply gases that help sustain a stable atmosphere.Without tectonic activity from a sphere, Earth would not support life. About 4.6 billion years ago, volcanoes started growing above water. They released gases that changed the atmosphere from hydrogen sulfide, methane, and carbon dioxide into one containing oxygen, nitrogen, and water vapor—gases necessary for life.

Earthquakes, which proved more costly than volcanoes in the last century, also serve a restorative function. Both earthquakes and their byproducts counteract general erosion. Waves and tides wear down coastlines, but these events create new sand deposits.Earthquakes create new sand deposits. These deposits bring back sand lost through erosion.

A flat Earth keeps water out of the atmosphere, making the planet dry. Without water, erosion stops, so needing new sand is unnecessary. Earth remains self-sustaining, but it becomes lifeless.

Earth Would No Longer Orbit The Sun

Gravity is a basic reason the solar system works. The sun's mass and gravity pull planets, combined with their sideways movement, causes orbits. The Flat Earth idea denies gravity exists, but the gravity we feel comes from Earth accelerating upward at 9.8 m/s².Earth accelerates upward at 9.8 m/s².This acceleration equals 32 ft/s².

This claim questions gravity on a global scale. Earth moves sideways constantly.Earth moves away from the sun.Earth moves at a constant speed. If Earth lacks gravity, no other cosmic object has gravity either. Our solar system would break apart. No gravitational pull between the sun and planets means they move sideways. All objects in the universe would spread out from the Big Bang's origin, not cluster into systems.

Scientists do not know how gravity works on a flat surface. Most suggest gravity will gotoward the center of the disc. This happens no matter where an object is on the disc. This mirrors how gravity works on a sphere. On a sphere, every point on Earth is the same distance and faces the same direction from the center. A flat surface changes this; distance and direction change based on where you stand.

If you stand at the disc's center, gravity pulls straight down, like normal gravity. Walking away from the center, however, Earth's gravity pulls noticeablyboth up and across.Gravity pulls toward Earth's center of gravity.

The Edges Of Earth Would Be Deserts While The Center Would Be Aquatic

Earth's even gravity and the moon's field combine to affect Earth. The moon's position and distance greatly impact Earth's ocean tides.Ocean tides get greatly affected. The moon's location and distance pull water on Earth's surface toward it. This creates bulges aligned with the moon on both sides of Earth. These bulges are high tide; the resulting low tides form perpendicular to them.

Earth has much more mass and is closer to surface water than the moon. This gives Earth a bigger influence. But gravity's uneven spread on a disc-shaped Earth creates bad water distribution. A strong downward pull at the center and a strong horizontal pull toward the edges pull water away from the sides andgather at the center. The flat Earth's edges are dry and arid. The farther a person moves toward the center, the higher the sea levels rise.

The flat Earth's shape creates a problem for all life. Because Earth is not a sphere, people might have a limit to travel before hitting the edge. But can they fall off once they get there? Not exactly.

Gravity still exerts a force on the person. It pulls them toward the center. The disc has a specific surface. People on the edge face a different direction from the flat Earth's main surface but do not fall off. This creates two perpendicular planes: the flat surface, its underside, and the border.

Some flat-Earthers say this issue does not exist. They argue people never experience it at Earth's edge. Instead, they experience the "This explores the 'Pac-Man effect' within the 'What If Earth Was Flat?' list.It is like in a game ofPac-manOnce a person reaches the edge of the flat Earth, they teleport from one side of the plane to the other.

The Sun Would Never Fully Set Beyond The Horizon

In space vacuum, light travels atThe speed is 186,282 miles per second. It will not stop until something blocks it. This explains why we see stars millions of light-years away. It also explains how we see our solar system. Planets do not make their own light. They reflect sunlight, letting us see the planets at night. The moon does this too, but being closer to Earth, it looks bigger and brighter than other objects.

This basic law creates a problem for the Flat Earth theory. Since light waves never stop, and the sun and moon orbit above Earth, light hits every surface. This only happens unless theThe sun is much smaller.than scientists state. Flat-Earthers claim this reason, but that brings unique problems.

The theory states the sun sits 3,000 miles above Earth and circles. This gives different light amounts to surfaces at different times. If this is true, thesun never sets; it stays visible, and so does its light.

There Would Be No Cell Phones Or GPS

Satellites require lateral speed and gravity to stop falling back to Earth. Because Flat Earth theory says gravity is missing or small for planetary motion, much modern tech fails.Lateral speed and gravity cause this.Gravity is either absent or small in the Flat Earth theory, meaning much modern technology will not function.

Satellites provideThis eliminates many important services.like GPS, cell service, and TV broadcasting. They also offer safety checks for weather and climate. A flat Earth lacks gravity and supposedUpward acceleration occurs.causes every satellite-based convenience to fail.

    There Would Be No Seasons

Different seasons cannot happen on a flat planet. Earth's tilt and orbit around the sun cause seasonal changes. Since Earth moves around the sunThis happens on a tilted axis.Different world parts get different light amounts depending on the year. If Earth were flat and other astronomical things stayed the same, we would face endless sun on one side and endless dark on the other.

Imagining a flat Earth while keeping physics the same creates many problems. Therefore, judgment comes from the universal model offered by the Flat Earth theory. What happens to seasons if Earth is flat andthe star was a tiny objectIt hovers above Earth.

The sun would never go beyond the horizon. The sun never goes beyond the horizon. The sun never sets or rises anywhere on Earth. This means there is no seasonal change. Light always hits the flat planet. Weather and temperature shifts, caused by sunlight and solar radiation a region receives, become small.

    Forests Would Grow Sideways

Negative gravitropism is an important trait in most plants. This quality signals the plant to grow up or away from the center of gravity. Without it, leaves and branches might try to grow down and fail to get sunlight.

This quality changes a lot on a flat Earth. Plants grow away from gravity. On a flat Earth, gravity pulls toward the planet's center. So, the closer a plant is to the edge, thesharper the angleits growth angle becomes. Near the border, plants grow almost 90 degrees away from the planet's center.
