About this list

Pulling off an event takes more than a good idea. Permits, budgeting, and advertising are essential, but having the right contacts, patience, and resources is also vital. The key skill, however, is handling the worst-case scenario, which can happen, especially when wind is a factor. Well-intentioned attempts at fun can have dangerous or fatal consequences. Things to avoid include balloons, skittish jaguars, and cheap alcohol. Common sense is always helpful.

United Way of Cleveland, Ohio, released approximately 1.5 million balloons in an attempt to break a world record set by Anaheim, CA, the previous year.United Way of Cleveland, Ohio, released approximately 1.5 million balloons. In 1986, the spectacle began. The entire sky filled with rapidly rising helium balloons, looking marvelous at first. The beauty quickly turned to disaster as the balloons returned to the ground. Rain before the release blew the balloons away from Cleveland, making the release and drop someone else's problem.

United Way settled several lawsuits from the balloon stunt. One resident in Medina County sued because balloons spooked their horse. Another woman sued over her husband's wrongful death; he drowned in Lake Erie. The Coast Guard likely would have found him if balloons hadn't covered the water and sky.

Coca-Cola offered a "MagiCan" promotion in 1990 that failed. To boost sales, the company hid cash and coupons inside about 750,000 regular Coke cans, turning them into MagiCans. The company added lightly chlorinated water to make the prized cans weigh the same as non-MagiCan Cokes. The company added lightly chlorinated water. The company sealed the water away from the spring-loaded prize mechanism.

The seal between the water and the prize often failed. Many people drank chlorinated water. The promotion's fine print said the water was not safe to drink, yet the company was still responsible for its poor warning. Coca-Cola ran expensive newspaper and TV ads to stop people from drinking the MagiCans.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City has many mishaps and injuries over its long history. The 1997 parade was a bad example. High winds made handling the huge, poorly regulated balloons nearly impossible, causing major problems for over two million people.

A strong gust of wind sent the Barney balloon into a lamp post. It shredded the dinosaur's leg and quickly deflated. Handlers struggled to stabilize the float. Soon after, the Cat in the Hat balloon faced a similar lamp post fate. The float spun out of control, landing on several people who suffered severe injuries from the balloon's weight and debris.

Kathy Caronna fractured her skull and remained in a coma for almost a month. She kept permanent brain damage from the incident. She suedMacy's, the city, and the lamp post manufacturer for $395 million.
