About this list

Gladiator II isn't a remake, but it's packed with references to the original Gladiator. Director Ridley Scott deliberately recreates specific images and beats from the 2000 film, making it feel like a re-do. Scott returns 24 years later, joined by Denzel Washington and Paul Mescal, who plays hero Lucius Verus Aurelius, aka 'Hanno'. Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Connie Nielsen - back as Lucilla from the original - also star. Gladiator II regularly nods to the first movie's famous elements, reprising iconic scenes like a hand in a wheat field and armor worn by Russell Crowe. It even quotes Maximus. The plot expands on the original, with characters like Denzel Washington's Macrinus building on those from the first film.

A Principled General Reluctantly Conquers On Behalf Of Rome

Lucius mirrors Maximus in "Gladiator II".Gladiator IIAcacius is like Maximus; he is a strong man seeking revenge and is Maximus' son. Also,Acacius echoes Maximus. He is a good, simple man tired of fighting wars for Rome's glory.

In his first scene, he establishes an obvious parallel. His troops worship him. He is no stranger to hands-on action. He appears deeply tired. Pedro Pascal plays him with the same principles and old-fashioned decency. He consciously evokes Russell Crowe's performance.
