Groot is more than just a single monster. He is a Floral ColossusThis describes a race of hyper-intelligent tree people. The term “Groot” also names the whole species; the name is not just for our favorite Floral Colossus.
Floral Colossi control all Branch Worlds, including Groot’s home, Planet X. Early on, Groot felt like an outsider among his people. Even though his species is plant-like, Groot liked the smaller “Maintenance Mammals” and fungi on his planet. The species, called the UndergrowthOther Floral Colossi viewed the Undergrowth as lesser lifeforms, but Groot saw them as friends.
Groot had to leave his home planet after he killed another Colossus while defending a Maintenance Mammal from harm.

He planned to uproot a whole town and take it back to his home planet for study, but a scientist named Leslie Evans stopped him.
Evans breeds a special colony of termites and releases them on Groot, ending his rule over the small town. Groot was thought dead for a time, but he reappeared.
