About this list

Mike Mignola's Hellboy comic series from Dark Horse may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of gore, but Neil Marshall's R-rated film adaptation is a reminder of the many violent moments in the comics. To fight monsters, you sometimes have to become one. Even ordinary superhero series have disturbing scenes, and horror comics like Hellboy are no exception. Mignola's comics emphasize atmosphere, but they're also filled with graphic imagery, from Hellboy's WWII arrival to his apocalyptic battle with the Blood Queen and adventures in Hell. The most violent scenes, from Seed of Destruction to Hellboy in Hell and beyond, laid the groundwork for Marshall's movie.
