About this list

The Predator franchise takes a sharp turn with Prey, ditching modern settings for 18th-century colonial America's Great Plains. Through the eyes of a Comanche warrior, Prey sheds light on a rarely seen culture. Given the canon that Predators have been hunting on Earth for centuries, we're excited to explore other historical opponents. To make the cut, our picks must meet three criteria: a visually stunning location, a fresh perspective from underrepresented groups, and a challenging match-up for the predator. We'll outline the location, era, and plot for the most promising historical titles.

    Jaguar Warriors

    Location: Mexico valleyMexico valley.

    Time: 1500s1500s.

Pitch: This might be lore-friendly becauseThis might actually fit the lore.Predator.Anna discusses a local legend, "El cazador trofeo de los hombres" ("the demon who makes trophies of man"). How far have Predators ventured to Earth taking grisly trophies? This movie could answer that.

TheJaguar Warriors. These were an elite fighting caste in theAztec Empire. They fought in the army's front lines and took captives for human sacrifices. The setting lets us see life in medieval Tenochtitlan as a party of Jaguars raids. Enter the Predator; the story tells itself. What makes this matchup interesting is themacuahuitl.a wooden club studded with obsidian carried by the warriors.

How does a Predator handle blows from a blunt weapon like that? Only one way to find out.

    Zulu Warriors

    Location:South Africa.

    Time:1879.

Pitch:SincePredator.Since the hunted must beat the hunter's tech advantage, the Zulu fit perfectly. Thebushveld and mountains offer good hunting spots. A setting near the Anglo-Zulu conflict brings in the British as a counterpoint, like the fur trappers inMountains offer hunt locations. A setting near the Anglo-Zulu conflict brings in the British as a narrative contrast, like the fur trappers in.Prey..

Zulu warriors showed courage, discipline, and stamina. They used better tactics to beat British firepower at theBattle of Isandlwana.. Lacking armor and using only an oxhide shield, the Zulu's main threat came from close combat skill.

Theiklwa., a short stabbing spear, and theiwisa., a wooden club, would challenge even a tough Predator if it fought fairly.

    Mapuche

    Location:Chile.

    Time:1600s.

Pitch:We see the Predator hunt in jungles and forests, but how does it fare in mountains? That is an idea aPredator.film set in the Andes could explore. The movie could take place around the time of theAracuao War.between the Mapuche and the Spanish.

The Mapuche fought Spanish land grabs hard. Spanish forces catching warriors faced brutal payback, like Galvarino, who kept fighting with knives attached to his stumps even after losing both hands.Galvarino.(pictured). After losing both hands, he continued fighting with knives attached to the stumps.

Would he work as a lead in aPredator.film? We do not need to bethathistorically accurate.

    Sámi

    Location:Lapland region, Finland.

    Time:1700s.

Pitch: Predators seem to prefer warm hunting areas. What happens if one enters the frozen north? This movie could answer that. The winter forests ofLapland. This area offers great scenery and plenty of cover for a Predator to hunt. Other films show the hunter suffers traps and poor vision from the cold. Humans facing it still have a shot.

The SámiPeople indigenous to northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. They mainly herd reindeer, but others earn a living hunting, fishing, and trapping. Fans of the TV showVikingsSeason 5 shows the Sámi’s stealth, though that show lacks historical accuracy.

A setting with hardy people and a strong culture in a harsh climate suits a Predator seeking a challenge.

    Cossacks

    Where:Steppes of Ukraine

    When:1700s

Elevator pitch: The Predator's cloaking and use of natural cover make spotting it nearly impossible. The grass steppes of Ukraine's Donbas Region have raised tough horsemen for thousands of years. From the Huns to the Mongols, the steppes are not for the weak.

The Zaporozhian Cossacks lived in theWild Fieldsin eastern Ukraine. They fought raiders to dominate the area and often got caught in conflicts between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Russia. They openly scorned outsiders, once responding to the Ottoman sultan's letter with theirown messagefull of insults.

That disdain for outsiders likely extended to an alien. The unique, strange setting keeps the creature alert.

    Sepoys

    Where:India

    When: 1857

Elevator pitch: In Predator 2, the Predator takes more than just human skulls for trophies. InPrey too, if the target is tough, our alien hunter enjoys the hunt. What could be tougher than aBengal tiger?

Setting a film during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 offers good story ideas. One path involves Indian troops working for the British East India Company who mutiny against the British. They could retreat into the jungle to escape pursuers, where they meet a greater threat: the Predator.

The Bengal Army first formed from local recruits serving the British East India Company in the 18th century. These well-trained, disciplined troops, known as sepoys, proved their skill in many fights. However, alot of complaintsSepoys against the British escalated into a rebellion in 1857. A story set around this time shows an event seldom covered in film.
