About this list

What's the difference between having a vast VHS collection and a hoarding addiction? Experts define a 'problem' as an inability to discard possessions. Many people form emotional attachments to their belongings. TV shows like Hoarders have led viewers to believe that hoarding only affects rural eccentrics. But hoarders come in many forms, and some may not even realize they're on the verge of being classified as suffering from the condition. Most people, even avid collectors, don't stack newspapers to the ceiling. However, experts say that's not the only sign of hoarding. The condition can stem from anywhere - some people are natural shut-ins, while others have untreated trauma. Without proper care, some hoarders may face a horrific death. Around 19 million Americans suffer from severe hoarding, which is linked to homelessness, house fires, and mental disorders like OCD. While some receive treatment, most hoarders go undiagnosed and untreated, resulting in tragic and often undiscovered deaths each year.
