Harry Houdini's Battle To Debunk Mediums

Houdini doubted the spiritualist movement grew. Tragedy made him re-examine seances and mediums. On July 17, 1913, Houdini's mother, Cecilia Steiner Weiss, passed.Houdini passed.aftersuffering a stroke.Houdini stayed close to his mother. He wrote, "If God in his greatness ever sent an angel on earth in human form, it was my mother." Houdini struggled for months after his mother died, writing to his brother Theo:

I can write when I avoid that heart subject. I must write to my brother sometimes about HER whom we miss and for HER with whom I feel my heart went with HER.

Many think his deep heartache started him dabbling in spiritualism.dabbling in spiritualism.(and later debunking it out of frustration), but Houdini historians point out the illusionist actually attended his first séance as a child to contact his recently deceased half-brother,Herma.n.. Even young, Houdini thought seances and mediums were nonsense.

From January 1918 to December 1920, the H1N1 virus, called the Spanish Flu then, hit the world hard. Nearly aThird of the world population.Or 500 million people contracted the virus; 3-5% of the world's population died.

Conflict deaths added to the casualties; many people searched for answers about what happened to loved ones after they left.searching for answers.Spiritualism filled every place, from a neighbor's living room to the cinema.cinema.The movement's popularity clashed with empirical science.empirical science., which also saw a comeback.

Houdini was friends with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle also liked spiritualism, but he did not scorn it like the illusionist. After Conan Doyle's son Kingsley died from the flu, the author became apassionate supporterof the movement.

He had already grown interested in the subject before his son died, studying ghosts, fairies, and other supernatural things for decades.for decades.. Kingsley's death pushed Conan Doyle to study the occult with fervor. Conan Doyle's second wife, Jean, claimed she wrote and medium, communicating with an entity named Phineas who warned them of trouble.

Houdini's skill escaping chains and making things like an elephant vanish won fans. Some, like Conan Doyle, thought the illusionist hadinnate psychic abilities. - which Houdini always denied. Houdini knew sleight of hand and how to make real illusions, so he easily debunked many mediums who used shaking tables and wobbling chairs as proof of the afterlife.

Houdini.told a reporter. If any alleged spiritual medium claims supernatural help, you can safely dismiss them as frauds.

Houdini used "secret" employees to stop fake psychics and mediums. By the 1920s, when spiritualism peaked, Houdini had attended hundreds of seances but could not cover everything. He hired a few people.Houdini deemedHoudini set up his "own secret service" to expose con artists exploiting desperate people. Rose Mackenberg, a private investigator employed by Houdini, said she attended over 300 seances during her time with the magician.

One alleged psychic tried to charge Mackenberg $25 for services. That psychic also claimed removing her clothes would improve communication with the other side. She refused. After she told Houdini, he embarrassed the man at one of his shows.

Sherlock Holmes fan Conan Doyle proposed a contest to check if mediums were real. The magazineScientific American ran a contestoffered a hefty$2,500 prizepaid any psychic or medium who could prove they had a supernatural gift.

Scientific Americanenlisted top minds: an engineer/physicist from MIT, two paranormal researchers, and Houdini. The magazine expected these experts to figure out if psychics had an unknown force granting them powers.

Many so-called psychics and mediums wanted to show proof toScientific Americanthat they were real and collect the reward. Houdini and the panel easily disproved any supposed medium, largely because of Houdini's illusionist experience.magicianLos Angeles Times, "It takes a flimflammer to catch a flimflammer," and he caught many flimflammers.

He proved that 19-year-old Joaquin Maria ArgamasillaJoaquin Maria Argamasilla, who claimed he could see through metals like gold and silver, acted like a showman in public. He called the "Spaniard with X-Ray Vision" and promised to copy his "power" at the Pennsylvania Hotel. Houdini showed Argamasilla only took aNino Pecoraro, who had fooled the panel twice. The third time, with Houdini present, Pecoraro could not copy his psychic abilities.Houdini, with help from the rest of the committee fromScientific American, who fooled the panel twice before. Houdini and other judges attended two seances of hers in Boston in July 1924. He claimed he saw her escape constraints and ring a bell—a signal for a spiritual entity's presence—with her foot.He saw her with her foot.Everyone except Houdini remained convinced.

Margery the Medium gained massive popularity, which annoyed Houdini. To prove she was not a real medium, Houdini used strange, sometimes damaging tactics. To stop Margery from using her legs during the séance, Houdini put her in a box.Houdini placed her in a boxed contraption. The bell rang while she was boxed, but the lid appeared forced open. Giving an award to a medium without strict checking means every fraudulent medium will take advantage. I forfeit a thousand dollars if I do not detect trickery. If she is genuine, there is nothing to expose, but if she tricks, that is different. If Scientific American declares her genuine by accident and she is later found to be a fraud, we will be the laughing stock of the world, and hundreds of fraudulent mediums will exploit the mistake. If Scientific American declares her genuine by accident and she is later found to be a fraud, we will be the laughing stock of the world, and hundreds of fraudulent mediums will exploit the mistake.

Houdini proved his point; Margery was revealed as another fraud.

Outing Margery as a trickster deeply affected Houdini's friendship with Conan Doyle. Conan Doyle had praised Margery as real, but Houdini's harsh words caused a public split. Houdini, the famous conjuror, attended two sittings first. A long series of events happened. Houdini passed them, made no objections, and signed the accounts as correct. Still, he could say nothing before the Crandons. He wrote to people far away who could not check his statement to say the program was fake.

The author felt upset Houdini did not suggest Margery was a fraud during the seances, only later from a distance. Their relationship never mended.

Houdini gave his wife a secret message. This test aimed to see if spiritualism was real.HoudiniHoudini gave his wife, Bess, a "secret code" if he died before her. Houdini planned to use the code to contact Bess, proving an afterlife existed and communication was possible. He passedTwenty years beforeHoudini gave his wife a secret message on October 31, 1926.

Modern illusionists like Penn and Teller cite Houdini as inspiration, especially when debunking supernatural claims. The famous duo had a series calledBullsh*t! This series aired on Showtime from 2003 to 2010, following the duo as they tracked discredited psychics and mediums worldwide.

Late sleight-of-hand performer Ricky Jay alsoexposed fraud and trickery, like carnival tricks. Ricky Jay was one of the best sleight-of-hand performers. His illusion expertise let him spot other tricks, just like Houdini.
